Mid-Autumn (Mooncake) Festival

Tonite is full month on the 8th month in the lunar calendar. Which is the Mid-Autumn Festival over in China/Asia. I like to call it Mooncake festival.

I don't have any mooncake with me right now to take any pictures, but here are a couple close-up shots of the moon from Houston, taken a few minutes ago:

Thank u, rkkwan. I can never remember when this day is supposed to be. In Vietnam children are out with their red lanterns and everyone is exchanging mooncakes. I love the savory ones with the duck egg yolks.

U've inspired me to try to track some down in my Chinatown in HI.

So we're NOT getting those mini-nouveau-Asian-fusion cakes from Chef Chang then??

no, no, I'm working on it! The restaurant owner is trying to see what she can do because the moon festival is over. And Chef Chang, as most chefs are, is an angry chef.

Try Lin Fong Bakery on Maunakea Street for locally made mooncake, also Royal Garden at the Ala Moana Hotel.

Sun Chong on Hotel Street brings in mooncake from San Francisco.

I'm shipping in ten boxes later this month for a moon viewing event at KCC. The cake will be from Eastern Bakery in San Francisco, which makes cakes year-round.

Just how can you guys in Honolulu get real mooncakes? Here in Houston, we can get ones made in Hong Kong, China, California, Canada and local. All in the traditional lotus paste & egg yolk style. I can't believe you guys can't get any!

I arranged for 20 boxes of mooncake to be brought in to Honolu from Eastern Bakery in San Francisc0.

One box of lotus paste mooncake with double egg yolk was delivered to MelissaHi at Aloha Tower.

Mooncake is now a global commodity. Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, San Francisco.

Haagen-Dazs makes an ice cream version.

Yeah, PPC-that surprises me as well! It's hard to find a more authentic Chinatown, and Asian bakeries than what you'll get in HNL! I'm quite surprised to hear you would have to import authentic mooncakes from SFO!
