medical insurance for China

I need advice on the type of medical insurance to get for 3 weeks in China. I will be a member on a surgical mission, in the past it was part of the pkg as a volunteer but not on this trip. Thank you, Maxine

What do you need? I would expect you would need med evac. Is the closest appropriate facility ok with you or do you want to be med evac'd home? Do you want insurance that pays for any treatment you receive then and there or are you content to pay and submit forms for reimbursement later? Does your medical insurance pay for urgent care in foreign countries?

My approach is to simply buy what I need. My medical insurance does pay for care in foreign countries, and I'm fine with paying as I go and asking for reimbursement when I return home. I do always carry med evac - indeed, I buy it by the year. It's very inexpensive when you buy year-long policies.

Thank you Kathie, I will look into my BC/BS Personal Choice policy. I do not know if they cover urgent care for foreign travel.

I do not plan on going out of the country again after this mission in Aug. I will look into a med evac plan. Do I just google that and go from there or do you suggest a particuler carrier?
Thanks again, Maxine

What I do is use a DAN membership. Take a look at www.diversalertnetwork.org

Click on membership (not insurance) and you'll see that a benefit of membership is Med Evac insurance, You do not need to be a diver to join, and the med evac insurance covers med evac for accidents and illnesses and does not need to be related to diving.

There are other med evac policies you can buy by the trip or by the year. Some reputable ones are International SOS, Travel Assist Network, and Med Jet Assist. There are, of course, many others. You can find all of these via google.
