May Have 1 Day in BKK

I have posted several times with regards to our India/Nepal/HKG trip..There is a possibility that there will be changes in the itinerary due to the recent happenings in Nepal..And in that case we will have 1 day in BKK before heading to HKG..Now, we have been to Thailand twice before, but not to BKK since 1994!!! We have already seen the Royal Palace, clong tour, Temple of Dawn...hundred's of other Wat's, Floating Market, Rose Garden, Patpong night market, etc..
We stayed at the Montien Riverside..Which was brand new at the time and very nice, but out of the way...
What we didn't do is take a river taxi nor take the Skytrain (as it was not there yet)..So I ask all the BKK addicts...Where would be a good place for us to stay (central) on the River, close to the skytrain, perhaps close to a market (need to shop)that we can spend 1 day and night...We like nice, as a matter of fact, we like really nice, but want a relaxed atmposphere where we can wear our short (back to the shorts thing again!) I have looked up a few hotels and prices are actually quite cheap in BKK..Thanks...

Despite not satisfying your on the river criteria I like the Four Seasons and it does satisfy all your other criteria - it is very comfortable, near the BTS, near great shopping at Central Dept Store Chitlom, Gaysorn Plaza, the Siam Center malls,MBK and the Night Bazaar. U can wear your shorts easily - everyone does! The service in true Four Seasons style is great as is the ambience. On the river my favourite is the Peninsula but it does not satisfy your close to the shopping criteria and for just 1 day IMO being centrally located for shopping is important.

you don't say what kind of shopping so that doesn't give us much to go on...with the skytrain it now doesn't really matter where you stay....

for one nite i think i might consider the jw marriott hotel: soi 2 sukhumvit road...nana skytrain stop is 2 minutes away and it is easy access to and from the airport by taxi and the toll road...there is tons of shopping near-by as well in both directions...its around $90-125.

on the river the shangri-la is right next to the skytrain...again 2-4 minute walk depending where your room is...

rhkkmk..not shopping for anything in particular, just things!! I checked out the jw marriot and it looked really nice..Also checked out the 4 Seasons hobbes and it also looked nice, only more expensive..Thanks, in a few days we will know if our Kathmandu extension is cancelled and whether we will be going to BKK instead..I am hoping for 2 nights, but it all depends on the airline rules...
Also, it was 10 years since we were in BKK so I am sure things have changed, but we shopped at Patpong Night Market..Is that still the thing to do?? I remember the Montien being not too far...Has anyone stayed there?? I will check out Shangri-la next...Any other ideas??

It sounds like the Shangri-La would be the best choice, they don't have any pretentious dress code there that I'm aware of, it's on the river and next to the skytrain, plus it's very close to the little artisan shops along the way to the Oriental, AND it has lux rooms.

Just got back from Thailand 3 days ago - stayed at Landmark Hotel which is very central to shops - only 2 mins from Nana Skytrain station which can take you to River/Patpong - but more importantly for your short stay - only 3 stops from majot shopping areas of Siam Centre/World Trade Centre & MBK.

PLus hotel was fantastic - had a buffet meal in main lobby area restaurant for equivalent of £6.00 per person - 5 star luxury at cheap prices, plus non snobbish attitiude - in fact, very laid back.

tracy---the shangri-la is often available through priceline for $55-65...don't know if you are comfortable using priceline? you bid for 5* in riverside /silom area to get it...

patpong nite market is still running as is a night market rougly at the intersection of rama IV and wireless roads...

mbk is very popular because there is so much in one place and a/c...near siam sq

i know what you mean about stuff....that's what my wife buys---tons of stuff
