Malaria in the Cameron Highlands

Our local travel clinic has recommended that we take Malarone before we head to Malaysia. We are spending most of our time on the West coast, KL, Penang, Melaka etc., where malaria is not a problem but also visiting the Cameron Highlands for 3 days. What do you think about the need for malaria prevention ?

hey paisano; relax, have a galiano over, and chill it. i've lived in kl and penang, and been to ch in the sixties, and never had any problems. ask your travel clinic to provide documented evidence to justify what ever they are recommending. i'm sure the malaysian health ministry would be interested to know of their findings.

The Health Office for Cameron Highlands on their website says " The danger here is that, with the exception of Sg. Ruil, all the other Aborigines' villages are endemic for Malaria " These are part of the CH and so we are wanting to know what travellers who visit the area do. Take malaria medication or not ?

i would think if you stay in the area that is normally populated, and not wonder off into the remote areas, you will be ok. i don't you will be exposed while hitting the white ball, or meandering around town. stay at fosters smoke house.

I recently purchased Malarone for my husband and me for our trip to Thailand 3 weeks ago. We never used it and I never even opened the box. The box has 24 pills. If you are interested in purchasing it cheaply, contact me at [email protected]. It's quite expensive at the drug store. I purchased it at Sam's Club in October, 2004, just a few weeks ago.
