malaria in koh samui or chiang mai?

Has anyone who has been to Koh Samui taken anti-malaria drugs? Are they needed on the island at all? what about the central portions of chiang mai? Please advise. we will be there in mid-late march. Thanks.

Here's the website for checking on malarial risk areas: www.cdc.gov/travel

Neither Koh Samui nor Chiang Mai are malarial risk areas.

I'm heading out to BKK, Chiang Mai and Chiang Ri on Sunday. The nurse at the travel clinic at our university urged us to take Malarone (one anti-malarial) because our route is not firm, and the downside to taking it is small. But most of the people she has seen going to BKK have been relief workers, so she may be somewhat overcautious. DEET-based repellant is mandatory.

We went to Chiang Mai about 4 yrs ago. We didn't take any anti-malarial drugs. We got a hell of a lot of insect bites though. We went late May / early June so it was the start of the rainy season. That might've been the reasonfor all the bites.
