Hi,
Thanks everyone.
I guess my question is not what the exchange rates on the web indicate but what are tourists actually "currently" getting for the US dollar in India which could/is different.
Thanks for your inputs.

You mean the black-market rates? I wouldn't go there...
Kathie, I'm very much looking forward to reading about your trip. What will all of us do now that dogster doesn't weigh in? We are all lost...

"What will all of us do now that dogster doesn't weigh in? We are all lost..." - dogster was always a fun read, and I'm sorry he's no longer posting here, but were you really planning to travel the way he often did? And a number of us somehow managed to travel successfully in India before he ever showed up here.

gpeter, you should be able to get an approximation of the xe rates if you use an ATM or exchange money at a bank.
LA, I will certainly offer a full report of my trip when I return in December. I don't travel the way dogster does, but I've gotten a tremendous amount of info from him in planning this trip. I hope that one of these days he'll return to post on Fodors. I've also gotten excellent info from many other regular posters.

I don't plan to travel exactly as he does, but he's got a wealth of experience in India and, from what I can tell, great taste. He knows what matters, and what's BS. His secret places thread is a gem. I wasn't implying he's the only source of good info, by any means. But an important one.
I'm looking forward to hearing about Sikkim and Darjeeling.
