Is it worth what? You ARE going, right? Or are you still undecided?

All the fakes are in Chinatown's nightmarket - all the things you mention. I wouldn't expect the watches to last very many years, so I suppose they aren't "good quality" but there aren't any other options. They're all the same. Sunglasses, DVDs (don't mix them up with VCDs), CDs, CDROMs, watches, clothing, handbags, etc.... it's all there.

If you want a hotel recommendation I suggest you let us know what you're looking for - budget? or splurge? Not that I'm great for those recommendations, since we lived in KL and now stay with friends when we go visit. But someone here can probably help. Also if you search the archives there will be lots of old messages about hotels. Golden Triangle area is the most popular, I think, but pricey.

Hope that helps.

Well, for a splurge I definitely recommend the Mandarin Oriental. We stayed there for Christmas and it was fabulous, even with just a standard room. Service was good, breakfast (included) was great, you can walk to KLCC (the area with the twin towers and KL's poshest mall: KLCC). We actually had a great view of the towers and the park behind, too. Beautiful bathroom - marble, mirrors, glass... I took three baths on Christmas Day just because it was so gorgeous!

Bukit Bintang and the more trendy areas are quite nearby. I think you could walk from that hotel to Jalan P. Ramlee, where some of the big nightclubs are. Otherwise you can take a cab - not too far to Bukit Bintang, Chinatown, etc, and not such a big deal with traffic if you are already IN the city.

There are lots of fab hotels in KL, though, and the rates are good compared to other countries. You'll probably do all right no matter where you stay, of the ones you've mentioned.

Hope that helps!

Marriot is pretty conveniently situated. Next door to the hotel is the swish shopping centre. Chinatown is walkable from the hotel but with the heat and humidity, I would suggest you hop on a cab, the cab ride is not that expensive. I bought a copy watch last year in Chinatown and it is still working which is to my surprise. The watch battery costs a lot more than the price of watch, so I plan to throw it away when the battery is flat.

Enjoy your trip.

I don't know how far it is from the Mandarin-Oriental to Chinatown precisely, but definitely something you'd need a cab for. OR you could take the Putra Line LRT from KLCC to Pasar Seni Station and walk from there. But if you're splurging on the hotel I'm figuring you'd probably take a cab - it's cheap anyway.

The Marriot is nice, btw... I haven't seen a room, but have eaten there. VERY posh mall attached: Star Hill Plaza, I think. It's in the Golden Triangle, so Bukit Bintang Walk is right there.

On fake watches, I've got a fake Roly that I bought in Malaysia in 1991 and it's still going strong. I've only changed the battery once - the trick (told to me by a watch repairer in the UK) is to pull the adjuster out when you're not going to be wearing it for a while, so that it's not using the battery.

Was in KL in January for about 5 days and stayed at the wonderful Renaissance Hotel. This was fabulous and close to the Hard Rock Cafe. But for shopping etc. it was a bit too far away. Next time I would stay somewhere like Marriotts which is right in the middle of great shopping. Catch taxis to go places where you cannot get to on foot as taxi fares are reeeeeeeeeeeellly cheap!! A wonderful place to visit.

Mandarin Oriental is next to KLCC, where the Petronas Twin Towers are situated at. If you stay at Mandarin, it's right next door to KLCC shopping complex which house many high-end name brands boutiques.

As for Marriot, it's right in the middle of Bukit Bintang shopping strip - which has several shopping malls.

Both Marriot and Mandarin Oriental are quite near Chinatown - in fact almost the same distance and as such there is no difference if you take a cab.

I would choose Marriot - since there a more than 1 shopping mallls within walking distance compared to Mandarin Oriental and its easier to find non-hotel food in Bukit Bintang area.

China town has many stalls for clothing, shoes, imitation bags, fake watches, VCDs, DVDs, silver jewellery, sun glasses and many other interesting stuff. Be sure to bargain - usually they marked up the prices to at least 50% above what it should be.

I bought a copy watch from China Town for USD$15 and have used it for 6 years.

If you have time, you can also drop by Central Market which is 5 minutes walk from China Town. You can find many local handicraft items to buy as souvenirs.
