I agree that Steve's comments are definitely relevant here. To be an informed traveller you have to hear the good and the bad. Of course we would all like to hear that our planned destination is a utopia, untouched by the world's problems, where the locals are hospitable and life is beautiful. However, this information, often touted by Internet travel guides, must be examined with a critical eye. Thailand, like many non-western countries, is plagued by pollution, poverty and homelessness. The fact of the matter is that so many of us that travel to Thailand are part of the problem. But that discussion is not relevant here.
Before I travelled to Thailand I soaked up information similar to Steve's comments. I journeyed there expecting filth, touts and hassles. In spite of my expectations, more times than I can remember I was sick of that country and the people. But each travelling experience is different. In retrospect I value those bad experiences just as much as the numerous great experiences I had during my travels.
Just be thankful that you only had to visit Thailand. Part of world travel is gaining perspective on how other people live, not just getting a suntan.
