Continental have Newark-HKG new 777's. Not sure about equipment aboard UA flights yet. The CO 777's certainly have tv screens.

My suggestion is to try and find an airline that isn't "American"! I have been living in Asia for the last year and have been using "Asian" airlines and feel as though the service is far superior. I am American and have flown "American" airlines for my entire life prior to moving to Asia and will never fly with one again. The crew that does the flights overseas are usually old and angry, while the asian airlines treat you like you want to be treated!
good luck

As a follow up to Jame's comment, Pacific Delight has a great deal to Hong Kong on Continental ... airfare from Newark to/from HK + hotel + sightseeing for 8 days starting at only $665.

I haven't flown UA from New York to Asia in over a year, but UA was certainly one of the last airlines flying to Asia to start upgrading their planes with things like individual video screens. The last time I flew UA, the 747s had individual screens only in business and first, not in coach. I don't know if that's changed over the past year or not. It looks like the direct flights from JFK to HK are 747s.

If you're flying in economy, the leg room is terrible. Try your best to get an aisle seat. Otherwise, you're likely to feel very claustrophobic. Room in business and first is fine, but if you're in business, try to avoid getting a middle seat.

To get more info., you might try asking your question on the website www.flyertalk.com. Try the frequent flyer board for UA.

I know Cathay Pacific will start flying non-stop JFK-HK this September. They have individual TV screens and great service compare to UA. I know continental's Newark-HK also have individual TV.

USA Today had a long article in the Friday travel section about 2-3 months (approximate) ago about this flight.

By the way, due to low demand, the nonstop JFK/HKG flight will be discontinued at the end of August. I believe Cathay Pacific is beginning non-stop service around Sept. 1, in addition to their currently scheduled 1-stop service via Vancouver. Cathay's service is far superior.

Billy is right that UAL will be stopping their service form JFK to HK.

I just flew on UA from JFK/HKG r/t in Business Class and the service was OUTSTANDING!! UA uses a 747. It's HUGE and there is PLENTY of space to walk around on a 15/hr.!! The seats were very comfortable and the food was delicious!! The flight attendant service was EXCELLENT!! Very personable and highly efficient!! I am sorry to see them abandon this route because they SOLD me on it!! Good luck to you in your journey.

UA is indeed cancelling the JFK-HK direct flight at the end of Aug for the simple reason that demand has been very very low.

So, you will have all the space you want as rows and rows of seats will be empty. How about a nap in the 4-across seats in the middle?

Cathay does have much better service and their direct flight starts in Sep.
