JFK-BKK route canceled?!?!
Hi all -
I checked first to see if anyone else has mentioned this on the board, haven't seen it yet. I got a call today from Thai Airways to say that the JFK-BKK route is being cancelled starting July 1.
Our trip was scheduled for July 2. I sat on hold with Thai Airways for 1h45min, and the best they could do for me was reroute through FRANKFURT - depart July 3, arrive July 5. Or, they could refund the cost of our tickets and we can use another airline.
I see a reasonable fare on AA from JFK-BKK through Narita. Has anyone flown this, and if so, how is AA for this flight? I am not generally happy with their service so I am hesitant.
Also, has anyone else been in this situation before? Do the airlines ever compensate you beyond the price of your ticket (say, pay for my first 2 nights in BKK or something like that to make up for it?)
I know you have to roll with the punches when it comes to travel, but I'm a little bummed about this turn of events. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated...

There is a long thread on this topic, beginning when the cancellation was just a rumor. It's called Thai AIr to cancel JFK-BKK? Look for it by searching on Thai Air on this forum. There is also a long thread on flyertalk.

The Frf route sounds just fine and as a rule, the big non-US airlines are so much better than the US lines. There are few long hauls more pleasant than Thai and I would certainly stick with them rather than any U.S. airline (where is Pan Am when you want them?).

We usually take the AA flight connecting in nrt on our bkk flights, but only because we have tons of AAdvantage miles.
The foreign carriers are much much better than the US legacy carriers(just my opinion).
You won't get much if anything at all from Thai because of the cx flight, except a refund. Now if they had to cx your flight the day of travel because of mechanical problems, you would maybe get a voucher or additional miles in your account.
