Japan Hakone Free Pass
Hello
I have been researching the Hakone Free Pass
We intend taking the Romancecar from Shinjuku station to Hakone Aug29th 2016 (one way)
Where would we purchase The Hakone free pass once we have reached Hakone
Is it more viable to buy the Romancecar train trip and then the Hakone Free Pass
Or
Would it be better to purchase The Hakone Free pass ( we are in Hakone two nights) from Shinjuku
We are not returning but heading to Nagoya
Thanks

Do you intend to use all the various transportation options there such as the cable car and boat?
If you're only taking the romance car one way, it may be a more viable option to get the free pass without the romance car. I'm not sure what your itinerary is, so I cannot judge accurately, but you should just calculate the individual prices yourself based on your plans and compare it with the price of the free pass.
Do note that the summer vacation may mean you are going to have to deal with some crowds. Be prepared to wait a bit but enjoy your time there!

From what I understand:
Hakone Free Pass r/t from Shinjuku is 5,140 yen. From Odawara is 4,000, so you're paying 1,140 more. But basic fare for Shinjuku-Odawara one way is 890 yen. [You still have to pay for your one-way Limited Express surcharge if you want to ride the Romance Car either you buy it as separate ticket or upgrade from the 5,140 yen Free Pass.
So, there's really not point in paying that 250 yen extra if you're returning to Shinjuku.
BTW, while the English isn't written clearly, I suspect you can buy the 4,000 yen pass at Odakyu's Service Centre at Shinjuku. You will be going there anyhow for your tickets, so never hurt to ask.

The latter as you get a discount on the Romance Car with your Hakone Free Pass. You can purchase your Hakone Free Pass and romance car tickets all at the Shinjuku station Odakyu window. We just took the Romance car one way back into Shinjuku but there was a discount with the Hakone Free Pass.
There were some closures in Hakone when we were there in December. The Ropeway over the Owakudani crater has been shut down due to volcanic activity in the area. The lower part of the ropeway from the lake has just restarted but you cannot take the ropeway the whole way as it is closed over the crater.
