Itinery for Macau, Hong Kong & ......

Hi everyone....

We're planning our 1st visit to Macau and Hong Kong this July for 11 days. Hope someone would be nice to give some comments or suggestions on our itinery. Thinking of going to one extra place like Beijing or Shanghai too.

2/7 - 6.55pm arrive in Macau
Any suggestions on what to do on first night?
3/7 - sightseeing in Macau
suggestions for must see or do, include Macau cuisine?
(Evening - cross over to Hong Kong by Ferry)
4/7 - Kowloon
suggestion of places to visit, eat dimsum, cheap shopping at night?
5/7 - Disneyland
How much time to spend in Disneyland? What are the popular rides and games not to be miss? Any good places to eat inside? Any close attraction nearby Disneyland we could go?
6/7 - Hong Kong Island
What to see & do ?
7/7 - Ocean Park
How much time to spend in Ocean Park? What are the popular rides and things to see. I heard there are pandas and dophins. How much is the entrance fee, does it include all the rides?
8/7 - thinking of going either Cheongchau, Lamma or Lantau Island? Or any other suggestion?
9/7 - Beijing (or Shanghai)
Thinking of either going from Hong Kong to Shenzhen first, then fly to Beijing coz I heard internal flight in China mainland is much cheaper or direct fly from Hong Kong to Beijing. Any comments?
Is it worth to spend a few hours in shenzhen? What to do on first day in Beijing?
10/7 - Great Wall
Which part of the Great Wall is better to go,Badaling, Simatai or Mu....? What are the difference? How much time to spend there? Apart from that, do we have extra time to visit other place? Do we really need to hire a tour guide or go on our own?
11/7 - Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Tiananmen Sq, Ming Tomb... are these places easy to go?
Any other places of interest not to be miss?
12/7 - ??
Is there any direct flight from Beijing to Macau?
13/7 - 2.00 am Macau - KL

Alternatively can anyone suggest an itinery for Shanghai instead of Beijing? Is it cheaper to fly from Shenzhen to Beijing than from Hong Kong? Should we book from where we are or ask a friend to book in Hong Kong?

All suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

I would suggest a day trip to Cheng Chau Island. (sp?). It's a nice change from the frenetic pace of HK. One side of the small island is lined with outdoor seafood restaurants. It's easy to walk the whole island.
If you like to shop, one of my favorite places on HK Island is the Stanley Market. It's an outdoor market located on the southern part of the island, right on the sea. It's a great place to buy clothes (I bought lots of cashmere there in 2004 at a great price!). They also have souvenirs and other decorative items. Take bus 6A or 6X from the Star Ferry terminal to get there. Right beside the market, along the waterfront are a variety of outdoor restaurants. There is an old customs house building that has a very nice restaurant with a beautiful view, but there are many others to choose from. The view is stunning.

I guess you're getting good fares from Kuala Lumpur to/from Macau, right?

Macau -

Anyways, Macau is small place. Fine to just walk around the central area (Senate Sq, St. Paul's Ruins, etc). All the buildings are beautifully lit and very safe. You should also visit the casino at Hotel Lisboa. It's really a site to be seen, even if you don't gamble. Or if your hotel is on Taipa Island near the airport, then walk around Taipa's old town and eat at one of the Portugese restaurants on Rua da Cunha.

Next day, it depends on what your interest are. My favorites include the Ghia Lighthouse, Monte Fortress (and Macau Museum), A Ma Temple and Maritime Museum, Kuan Iam Temple.

Hong Kong -

Disneyland is small. You can finish all the rides in 3/4 of a day. While it's on Lantau Island not too far from the airport, you can really combine that with another place. And since you already pay the admissions, why hurry. Have you been to any other Disney park in the world? The setup is similar to the other ones, just smaller with fewer rides.

Ocean Park's website is here: www.oceanpark.com.hk

Other attractions in Hong Kong are well covered in this forum. Do a search and you'll find lots of suggestions. I will say one thing, however. If you have just one day to the islands, go to Po Lin Monastery (and Big Buddha) and Tai O on Lantau. Cheung Chau is nice, but I think the above places are more significant.

Shenzhen -

Yes, internal flights out of there are cheaper than from Hong Kong. Go straight to the airport, unless you're interested in buying bootleg goods.

Beijing -

Again, lots of info on this forum already.

Beijing to Macau -

Yes, there are non-stop flights. Or, you can fly more cheaply to Zhuhai (ZUH), which is just across the border from Macau.

Thanks a lot for all your replies.

rkkwan, Should I book the China internal flights ( Shenzen - Beijing & Beijing-Zhuhai) online now or when I reach there? What are the airlines and website which offer cheaper fares?
Can anyone suggest a hotel on Taipa Island (Macau)? Do you think most hotels allowed 3 adults to stay in a room?

Thanks again!

You will get much better fare for internal Chinese flights in China. In fact, the best fares can be found at the departing city.

But for your itinerary, I would get the Shenzhen-Beijing ticket while in Hong Kong, at any travel agent. Or perhaps the Chinese-government's CTS (China Travel Service - several locations in HK). Maybe they'll have some good deal for HKG-PEK, and you can save the trip to Shenzhen.

Once you get to Beijing, find a travel agent and book your your PEK-ZUH or PEK-MFM flight.

---

There are a few hotels on Taipa. Don't get the Hyatt Regency, as it's too run down for the price it charges. If you're into gambling, the New Century has a large casino. I've stayed there a few times - while it's classified as a 5*, it's more like a 3.5*, and pay accordingly. Golden Crown China is closest to the airport, but I don't know what it's like, and it's not very convenient. There's also the pretty new Grandview and the Best Western Taipa.

---

There are no good online maps for China or Macau that I know of that are like mapquest or viamichelin. I usually rely on printed maps. For Hong Kong, this one may work for you, but I hate it:
