Well, no specific recommendations, but one positive note is that, except for a limited few places, food is DIRT CHEAP in Thailand. I remember our most expensive meal in BKK being a 6 course set-menu lunch, with alcohol, at a 5* hotel for around $40 US.
The food alone is definitely worth the trip!

JamesA -
just wanted to let you know we did decide to fly RT to Samui from BKK instead of the Lomprayah. We confirmed the flights today and they were a little less expensive then the rate you found when we purchased directly from the travel agent - and we don't have to fly at 6am!!
My husband really wants to spend as much time as we can in Samui so it was worth it in his mind to spend the money to fly.
Personally i would have like to take the slow route, it sounds fun...
I appreciate your helpful advise...any favorite restaurants you can recommed?

Hey JamesA
in case you still read this thread your suggestions do not go to waste despite heatherx having chosen to fly down..
In fact you made my life easy finding a way "down there" and I think I will be taking the slow route you suggested.
Thanks a bunch! Should I ever bump into you I shall buy you a beer or two

The coastline south of bangkok is one of our absolute favorite areas, beach hopping down the coast and ending up in Koh Tao / Koh Samui / Krabi or Phuket is a nice way to mix a more rural and lower key coast/beach areas with the busy areas.
It is anything from 30 minutes to max a couple of hours between places and all along the coast you have lots of good accommodation, even Evason's and the like ( e.g Evason Pranburi is about $90, but lots of cheaper places ).
If you want to mix 'rural Thailand', coastal scenary, national parks together with beach and snorkeling it is in my opinion a 'great' area of the country.
This site gives you ideas on places along the coast and also gives the distances between places if you want to stop along the coast. Koh Talu Island is a 'little gem'. Under 10 minutes with their own speedboat from the mainland.
