Is this possible? Narita to Hakone
Is it possible to get from Narita airport to Hakone? I only have two nites flying into Narita the morning of Jan 1 and out again the evening of Jan 3 and we wanted to skip Tokyo (have been there already) and go straight to Hakone to relax in a ryokan. Is this possible? If not what would you suggest?

I know you can take the JR Narita Express from Narita to Yokohama (I believe that is as far as it goes though) and then in Yokohama catch the train to Odawara (or if you are going to an onsen in Atami, you can also go a bit further than Odawara and get off in Atami). That is what I will do in March, although not all in one day. Check the train and travel times on Hyperdia.com
Narita express to Yokohama runs frequently, as do trains from there to Odawara. It's a quick trip for you.

BTW, I am researching my own trip, but I have done alot of reserach on Hakone and one thing I will advise you is to be careful what onsen you stay in in regards to where it is located. Some of them are far from the train stations, like another hour on the bus, and you don't want that w/your short time frame. Some are closer to train station or have a short shuttle bus that picks you up.

I just checked my notes- the Narita Exp. is 90 min to Yokohama station, then it is about 40 min. from Yokohama station to Odawara on the Limited Express trains (and about 10 min. further to Atami). You can do it, and if it was me, I woudl try to stay closer to rather than further from the train station to minimize another mode of transportation like another bus or train or tram-- there are so many of those in Hakone and they can take longer than you would think. In my research I saw a nice onsen in Atami on Japanese Guest Houses site that was very close to Atami station, and they even had a shuttle to deal w/your luggage and get you to the onsen.

I think you can also take the narita express to Shinjuku and then there is a private railroad line that will take you from there. you can buy a hakone free pass from Shinjuku that will cover all transport expenseves to and around hakone from Shinjuku.
Otherwise you can go to tokyo Station(on narita express) and take the Shinkensen to Odwara as well .

I posted above on the time going through Yokohama, which I think is the most efficient way to do it. I looked into that ryokan also- very $$$$ but great reviews, once in alifetime, etc. and the spa treatments look incredible. There is a review of Gora. K. on tripadvisor.com and also a thread on it on flyertalk.com
