Is 4 weeks too much for Peninsula Malaysia ?
We are planning a 4-week trip to Malaysia starting 23/7. We thought it would be better to do the trip the easy-way, taking our time and enjoying the various places we'll visit : for this reason we were thinking of focusing on Peninsula Malaysia. Currrently we planned a rather 'traditional' tour: 1-2 days in KL, Melaka, Cameron Highlands, Penang, some beaches &/or islands (Tioman?) on the east coast, Taman Negara Park...

Do you think 4 weeks are too long for Peninsula Malaysia alone ? What complementary trip would you best recommand in the same region: south Thailand, Sabah or Sarawak, or Sumatra ?
Which tour would be your best tip for this region and for 1 month ?

Thanks!

Xavier

Depends on how much and what you want to see. I would suggest spending a couple of days in Singapore, since it's so close to Johor. If you have kids you could potentially spend an entire day at Sentosa or the Zoo. Alternatively, try Haatyai in Thailand that's near the border.

Islands - Tioman is popular, also check out Perhentian and Redang in Terengganu.

It will be really hot and humid in Malaysia, so bring light clothing and am umbrella as you never know when it will rain.

maybe u might like langkawi island, which is just a ferry away from penang.

phuket in south thailand is also just a short hop away if you are going to hat yai.

4 weeks are more than enough in peninsular malaysia especially if you are planning to spend only 1-2 days in the major towns/cities.

If you do not plan to stay at one place for more 2 to 3 days, four weeks is enough to do Penisular Malaysia. From Penang, you can take trips to Sumatra and Phuket. I picked up a package for 4 days trip to Sumatra for M$600 a couple of years ago. And a package for Phuket for similar amount of money too.

Pulau Redang and Perhentian islands are less commercialised than Tioman and better place for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Sabah and Sarawak are also worth visiting but you need at least two weeks to do these two amazing states justice.

I wish I could say that I've gotten around Malaysia enough to suggest a four week itinerary! Unfortunately we don't get enough time to travel around.

Still, I think you could find enough to do in Peninsular Malaysia for four weeks. You could spend a week of it relaxing on an island (I vote for Redang, myself). Don't spread yourself thin travelling too quickly. Two days per town/city could get tiring (though to be honest, I wouldn't spend more than two days in KL, unless you plan to shop).

There is a newish airline that is offering SUPER cheap flights around. They just did an online promotion - fly anywhere in Malaysia for RM10! - to celebrate moving to KLIA from the old Subang Airport. Sorry, sold out now. But still some good deals. Check out www.airasia.com/skylights/webairasia/

I'd really like to get over the Sarawak one day. Kuching sounds like a nice city, and there is a lot of natural beauty there. But with baby on the way, I don't know when we'll get over there!

And you can check out my web-site for some pics/impressions of places around Malaysia that I have seen. members.tripod.com/expatsinmalaysia/ Enjoy!
