Thanks James A
I am goign to spend my first week I think down on Kata Beach - can't decide between Kata Palm Resort and the Tropical Gardens - any ideas?
We are spending the last 7 in the Banyan Tree for a once in a lifetime experience for us. We are not usually in that league! So hopefully we can save a few Bhat in Kata to spend in the Banyan!
Tks again

I have stayed at Kata Palm Resort, so can give you some advice regarding this property. It was very empty when I was there, as it was 1 month post psunami, so I can't comment on the crowds. Overall, though, we had a nice time there. The rooms had all the amenities, but were a little less posh than you would have at the lux resorts. The staff were helpful, and friendly, even dispite all of the grieving that I am sure many of them were going through at the time.
However, if you are looking for a beachside resort, then you may want to look elsewhere, as this property is inland, and a short walk to the beach. This served our needs, and we liked that many of the stores and restaurants were within walking distances. The area itself is lovely. The beach is very pretty, and it is closer to the pier if you are going to take day trips to Phi Phi and Krabi. Also there was a great restaurant, a little more upscale, in one of the hotels in Karon, called ON THE ROCK which had great ambiance and fabulous food. It is worth the tuk tuk drive. I can't comment on the other property, but I hope this helps.
