International flight?

I read on some postings that the flight from the US to China can get quit chilly onboard the aircraft. Thus, may need to dress accordingly. We are taking United over the North Pole route I think. Anyone have any experiences to share?

I fly United across the Pacific regulary. I find that United keeps its planes about the same temp on all of its flights. If I'm sleeping, I sometimes get a bit cool so I use a blanket. I guess I'd say that you don't want to wear shorts and a sleeveless top on a flight, but otherwise no reason to wear anything especially warm. Just make sure you are comfortable.

The route has little to do with cabin temperature. But US-based airline tend to keep their cabin a little on the cool side, compared to European ones. Some seats, like those next to the emergency exits, may be a little bit cooler too.

If you're flying in the summer, an IAD-PEK or ORD-PEK flight over the North Pole will be in daylight the whole way. That also keeps the plane a little bit warmer.

Layer yourself, cotton twinset plus a hoodie and comfy pants, and all airlines have blankets.

I think it also depends on you and your own internal thermostat. I'm almost invariably cold on planes, but I'm also the coldest one at the office - so maybe it's just me. I would never go on a flight without long pants and a jacket. And if the flight isn't full, you might be able to score a second blanket. I try to do so whenever possible. I just returned from Germany, and a young Indian woman was seated next to me. She pulled the blanket completely up over her head. I wasn't sure if she was cold or just wanted to sleep. She peeked out shortly thereafter and asked the flight attendant if there were any extra blankets. The answer was no - she looked so miserable that I gave her mine. I was chilly - but she needed it more than I did. So it's not just me! If you get cold easily, dress accordingly on a plane. If not, you'll probably be ok. Still, I agree with Kathie - no shorts/sleeveless tops.

I am always cold on planes, and always bring my own pair of thick cotton socks and a cashmere shawl (I don't mean a pahsmina which is not warm.) The shawl is much nicer than any of those blankets (even in businss class they are just not thick enough and they are generally cotton or some kind of polyester neither of which is really warm and they aren't really long enough, and I am a short woman). The shawl goes around you and you can use the airline's blanket on your legs. The shawl can then stay in your suitcase in the hotel if you aren't traveling in cold weather.

Agree on the layers, a top and a then a cotton sweater or jacket/blazer are a good ides. I'd rather unlayer than be shivering in the plane. Asian airlines tend to have really freezing planes in my experience.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm usually the first one cold when everyone else is comfortable, so I will take your advice to heart! Thanks!

On all flights, I bring a pair of heavy wool socks. The floors on airplanes can get really cold.
