India: electrical adapters and surge protectors
I have conflicting information regarding electrical adapters, with three possibilities mentioned. The first two are standard for European travel and easy to come by, but the third is a triangular arrangement of 3 smooth thin cylinders. I am unable to find this one locally and it is too late to order it online (leaving Friday). We are traveling in the Golden Triangle, staying at major hotels. Will I need the third type, and, if so, any suggestions as to where to buy it after I get to Delhi would be appreciated.
I am not taking a laptop, so had not thought of surge protection before, but now I'm thinking I should have it for digital battery charger, iPod, Palm. Alas, I cannot get my hands on the 220-240V type. Any thoughts? Do I need surge protection for those devices? Where to buy one after I get to Delhi?

You might check with your hotel first to see if they can supply an adaptor. Often they will oblige. We brought an adapter "kit" that had been useful on previous trips but found that sometimes the plugs just didn't match up with the outlet. We managed however and were even able to charge up our camera batteries on the train (1st class) using our adaptor and the electrical outlet there.

My daughter spent 4 months in India. She took a nice ransformer and several adapters, but only used the round two prong adaptor.
I was there for four weeks, and also used just her 2-prong (or borrowed one from the hotels when we both needed a charge at the same time.
Saw the three prong plugs, but there was always a 2 prong one in the same room. not sure what's the difference.

I have never had any issue needing a surge protector and I travel with laptop and ipod and Blackberry and mobile phone to India about twice a month. I generally stay in major chains, but also hook up in client’s offices and airports when I can find access. Electrical failures in offices and hotels and not uncommon, hotels generally have their own generators which switch on after a few moments, a surge has never been an issue. I would not bother frankly.
Rooms outlets may have three round pins, or be there US type it will depend on the age of the hotel. There may already be an adaptor in the room if you are talking about the Oberoi Vila hotels where they have already anticipated your needs. If you need different types (I have some European plugs on my equipment) they can oblige as well.
There is a website called voltagevalet.com that in my experience is a fairly reliable source of information on the type of outlet configurations you are likely to find in virtually any country in the world. Another helpful site is http://www.escapeartist.com/global/W...wer_Guide.html
