India - Best time of year to go?

We're planning to take a month in India some time this year. What's the best time of the year to go, taking rain, heat, monsoon, travelling conditions into account. We're planning to travel overland from Delhi to Mumbai. We had been looking at July/August, but after some research, it doesn't look good. Now looking at Oct/Nov. Suggestions welcome.
Tks
Paschal

Well, I was in India in May and it was beastly hot. 117 F in some places. I was told that the monsoon season was not that bad because it doesn't rain all day long and it is much cooler. It is best, however, to travel in the north of Indian from Oct. to Feb..

I would suggest toward the end of October. Also March is excellent..I just got back yesterday and we had weather in the mid-70s everyday, with a nice breeze. Anytime after end-April through to end-September is really horrible, either very hot or raining.

Hi have just came back from my India trip . I had a roaring time. The weather is no longer cold yet in Rjasthan I had to use light woollens in the night. I feel the weather would continue to be so till end March and then get more warmer. But Frankly End April or 1st week of May is the maximum you can take in the heat in Northeren India. October-March are the best times ofcourse. But then the flip side is that it is the season time and good hotels are at a premium. So if you can take a little heat April-May is the best deal time. If you want more infor you may contact the Manager at the agency that I used his name is Sanjay Sharma and his E-mail address is [email protected] give my reference or otherwise he is one bloke who is very forthcoming and genuine.

Cheers
Siv

The end of February is the best time to go to India. The South is cooler (70-85F), and the North begins to get warmer. Stay through March, and wash down your trip with 'bhaang' during Holi, the festival of colors which marks the beginning of the warm weather.

I went to India a few years ago and in Delhi, it is hot! and humid!
I spent a few weeks up near Shimla and the weather is cooler but still it was probably in high 80's and 90's as compared to 100+ in Delhi, same in Rajasthan. But you will love it just the same.

October through February would be the best for escaping the monsoon and the dog days of summer.

I was in India in late-February, early March, and the weather for the entire month I was there was spectacular. The nights were barely cool, and the days were sunny with highs in the mid-70s.
