Calypso Cabaret- my wife and I have been to the show and we consider it a very classy show,very entertaining, nothing embarrassing or vulgar- I would take my teen to the show- male or female it doesn't matter. Go you won't regret it!

Lin...Glad to know that you liked the Somerset. It's one of the serviced apartments at the top of possibilities for me.I researched over 30 serviced apartments, last year, and narrowed it down to about 5-8, I think it was. The Somerset is the one near the Four Seasons, I think, which is where I usually stay and would still like to eat regularly if I rent an apartment. Happy Travels!

, but considering the source, it doesn't bother me. the indochine was the only "name" restaurant that i have eaten at during my last three visits. and i would go back again to say hello to madame hoally.

guenmai; btw, on my last trip, i did pull a guenmai, and stayed at two different hotels, the grand china princess in chinatown, and the hi silom.
the hi was a bonus as i was unable to get bob's place.

rhkkmk- I absolutely love Biscotti. It's THE best. I have never had a bad meal there. I also love the breakfast buffet which is held in the Biscotti restaurant....definitely the best I have had at any hotel I've stayed at in BK...plus it's the only breakfast buffet where they can produce a glass of soy milk for me without any problem. Plus, the banana bread(loaf) is beyond heavenly. And at breakfast one can have a choice of western or Asian buffet breakfast buffet or a Japanese breakfast which is sent over from the Japanese restaurant across from Biscotti. It was a great breakfast of grilled salmon, rice,miso,poached egg in broth, among a few other things.I eat salmon for breakfast at home from time to time. So try the Japanese restaurant. I like eating Japanese food,too.I'm not Japanese, but lived part of my childhood in a Japanese neighborhood in L.A. county. So, I love the food.It's a nice switch from Thai food which I also love, but I eat at Thai restaurants at least once a week at home. Happy Travels!

guenmai; i noticed something missing from your japanese breakfast. i consider it to be the core of any good japanese breakfast, NATTO! i think its mrwunrfl favorite, mine too. next time, just ask for it, you'll love it.

My Mother in Law was here the last two months and brought home natto from Daiei several times.
Even though I am a very nice host, I refused to let her eat it when I was in the room. Sorry...it's the one japanese food I just can't take, especially in the morning!

anyways, this post was about carols visit back in bkk. how did it evolve into fermented soya beans???
carol; gomen for the sidetrack. pls, more of your tales in bkk. if you haven't been to victory monument in the morning, go there, and enjoy a foot massage, and a bowl of fresh noodles or donuts with an iced latte.

Good afternoon from Bangkok. I am taking it very slowly today as my boys were very bad last night and kept me out too late. We went to Skybar at the top of the State Tower building. It is a MUST DO for all of you. I can't begin to describe the awesome view and the bar itself. Some magazine said Skybar is the most beautiful bar in the world. I believe it!!! Everyone must go there!
Tawandang was fun, as always. We had Thai style dinner of pork and fish and papaya salad.
The restaurant that I mentioned from the Karnmanee Hotel rooftop had a menu in Thai and English. We did NOT order from the menu, but asked them to make the dishes for us. Items on the menu included snake head and frog.. YIKES.. a bit scary to think about, but thank goodness son was able to get us a really great meal by speaking Thai. I will have to look up that address, but it is near Saphan Kwai skytrain station.
The Phantom was a very good movie. I love the music very much. The acting in the movie wasn't all that great.. and I still prefer the stage play. But, it is always great to go to the EGV Gold Class Theater, no matter what you are going to view.
I went only to Pratunam Center, the mall. I did not wander around the whole area. Have not been to Pantip yet, but will probably get there before going back home.
Omni is on soi 4, yes you have to walk thru a rather sleezy area to get to the skytrain. The soi is always very busy with traffic and tourists. Omni is full of tourists staying here. There are some ex-pats living here also. They buy condos here. Nana is the nearest skytrain station. There is actually a tuk tuk at Omni that takes you to the skytrain station on the hour, so you don't have to hoof it if you don't want to.

Good morning from BKK. Ahhhh, it feels good to feel GOOD again. After a day of rest, I am ready to shop til I drop today. It is Valentines Day... happy v day to all of you... so all of upscale restaurants will probably be booked. It may be the right night to enjoy a bowl of chili at the Brunswick! Yummmmmm
The address for the Karnmanee Palace Hotel/rooftop restaurant is #1 Pradiphat Road, in Phayathai district. If you go to this hotel you will enjoy a very uniquely Thai experience. Be prepared for a very unique menu... snake head, frog, squid... but you can order more typical dishes like Pad Thai or tom yum gung (I think that's right) or a satay gai. Just be sure to order it "mai pet" so it doesn't burn your tongue.
Size of apartments at Omni Tower vary with number of bedrooms and whether it is an apartment or a studio room (which has bed and table in one room with kitchen area and bath). I have decided that my one-bedroom apt is about 250 sq meters in size. That is about the average size I would say. If you get two bedrooms, you will have another 100-150 more sq meters???
Bob, the location of the EGV Gold Class Theater is in Siam Discovery/Siam Center, top floor. Go to the Siam skytrain station and follow the signs, or better yet, ask someone how to get there. It's a bit complicated. There is an outside elevator between Siam Disc and Siam Ctr that goes directly to the theaters. This is the only access to the place after hours... ie after a late movie. You cannot go out thru either shopping complex. But you can use this outside elevator anytime of the day too. It's the fast way up.
Comparing Omni Tower to Grand President: GP is a bit nicer in the apts with more electronic items. Omni has a much nicer lobby with a few shops and an internet cafe, plus a full service restaurant. Room sizes are about the same, with GP being maybe just a tad bigger. My son prefers the Omni because it is just a short walk down the street to the Brunswick and his own pool hall a little further down soi 4. That is his biggest draw. Both Omni and GP require 10-15 minute walk to get to the skytrain station (both at Nana). GP soi is not sleazy, but is very crowded with food stalls and people and traffic. Uneven sidewalks make it a treacherous walk.. watch your step! I can twist my ankle soooo easily. Omni has a free (you should tip though) tuk tuk service on the hour to take you to the skytrain station, if you do not wish to walk along the soi. It is not a bad walk during the daytime, but lots of folks and bars at night, making it a little bit sleazy.
I think I ate at La Dalat last time I was here, and did not enjoy the food. It just did not appeal to my tastes. I have strange food allergies and would not want to risk my life for some of their menu items. If you like that type of food, I'm sure the place is excellent. Just not for ME...
I have no interest in seeing a Cabaret show... sorry BillT, so will pass on that. I do enjoy the stage production at Tawandang German Brewery very much though. No lady boys... just excellent singers and dancers and the band is superb. They do pop but also traditional Thai music. There was a very lovely Thai dance on the program which I had not seen before.
I will probably get to Victory Monument because I really want to go back to Saxophone. I enjoy jazz music and I think their music is really great there. May even go there tonight, if I can get "the boys" to take me there. It's Valentines Day so at least one of the guys has a date with his stock broker girlfriend. It may be a smaller group tonight. We'll see.
In any case, I shall report about my shopping experience in my next posting. I've found some gorgeous beaded bags at Pratunam Center and I want to buy some!

Am enjoying your mails from Bangkok, especially as we have booked for a week on our way back from USA and Europe soon.
I chose the Twin Towers, not far from National Park Skytrain Station, as it is walking distance from Siam Square, but also not far from Hualamphong Railway Station, and we want to be a bit adventurous and do some rail travel by ourselves.
Had not read about the Gold Class Theatre - it sounds great.
I've noted the Observation Deck on 77th floor of the Baiyoke Tower - am not sure where the State Tower Building is? Guess they would be comparable.
Enjoy your shopping! I've also read (Lonely Planet) that Yaowaret St in Chinatown, towards the Indian Section northwards is great for Thai shoulder bags and fabrics.Have you been there? Very crowded, apparently. Have fun!
