If you are planning BKK Airport area hotels after Oct don't forget new airport location !

Although still 8 months off some people will be making travel plans now for later in the year and the new airport location might be relevant to some. Basically it will be to the East of Bangkok, Novotel will be building a large hotel there but no idea when that might be open, so if people are planning hotels for 1st night or last nights after October don't forget that those hotels in the current airport area current airport won't be much use! I'll try and dig out which hotels would be closest to the new airport, maybe Orgy can give some ideas (?) towards that area.

Thanks, James. Do you think the airport will open on time, or will it be another Gaysorn Plaza, about a year late, and the much anticipated subway which finally opened? LOL I've not been out in the area near the new airport but may try to get there in my upcoming trip on Sunday for two weeks. I'd like to see it for myself and get my bearings on its location. Will it have the same name as the old one? Or will the old one remain open to be used as a second BKK airport??

James,

I wouldn’t hold my breath on this one! Just another Taksin knee jerk.

Friends working on it and I may be before long, suggest at least nine months delay. ICAO will not give it a nod until they are completely satisfied. I know, I worked with them on the new Hong Kong airport.

When are you coming up here so we can have that beer?

The sooner the better for me, waiting to see Jomtien property shoot up in value ! (Ha Ha!!), it's going to be quicker than getting to U-Tapao! I've got to get up to CM in the next couple of months, meanwhile getting heavy 'domestic' pressure to make 2nd move in a year, looks like it might be Hua Hin next.

They're still trying to work out what they'll do with the Don Muang (old) airport, but the latest suggestion is to use it for low-cost carriers.

Highly unlikely that it would be a domestic airport (like the NRT-HND model), as Thai Airways has a huge stake in the new airport and needs connections between its many domestic and international routes.

James, what's your estimate of how long it will take to get to the city from the new airport?

I'm guessing that we'll still be using the old airport when I fly in November.

I was told it was going to be at least an hour and a half from the airport to the city but they are trying to figure out a new road to make it shorter.

for those of ya that recently bought maps the airport may be pictured already.. it should be on the far left edge of your map

actually the airport is not that far (inside metro bangkok) using a peice of paper and pencil too roughly estimate distences I somehow figure that the new airport is only 5-10 minutes further away than DOn muang.

I go by the exit too the airport site every month and from there it takes about 15-20 minutes too get too central bkk. once inside the city it's 1 hour and 15 minutes too get too asoke bts station..
if ya arive at night like some of us do the trip should be no more then 40 minuts too any hotel in the city even the marriot resort..

I've seen a layout of the airport and it looks like many new airport; square in shape and everthing is fairly close by.. NO more walking from one airport terminal too next..

Good morning from Bangkok!!! I arrived Monday night, very late, actually Tuesday morning, due to a 2 hour delay at NRT.

Relative to this airport question, I thought you might like to know that my seat mate from NRT to BKK on this past Monday is someone who is working on the airport. He says that there are significant changes in design being made, so that the subway will enter UNDER the airport terminal, like in some European airports, and that the project is at least one year from being completed. Probably longer. He seemed to be very knowledgeable about the whole thing, and I trust his opinion that it is a long time before the new airport will be up and running.

It's great to be back in Thailand once again.

I didn't realize the airport was going too be so big..

I picked up a mag and found it will be the WORLDS BIGGEST AIRPORT.. featuring

-the tallest trafic control tower 132 meters)
-the largst underground shuttle service able too handle 45 million people a year.
-600 room hotel
-shoppng center
-the latest security systoms..
etc etc

--------------
it's only 25 kilometers (16 miles)

I dont know, I though it would be turned into a cargo center.. but apperently the new airport "will be able too handle 6.4 million tons of cargo.. or about the same as RHKMK's yearly export of silk..

Thanks, orgy. They'll probably continue to push it back, but I'm assured that it will be the old airport I'll be flying into in November.

An article in todays Bangkok Post states that the new airport's opening is delayed for 6 months. Opening is now April 2006, if not delayed further.
