I have been to the Golden Triangle (or at least, I was told that it was the Golden Triange). It was the area north of Chiang Mai where Thailand, Burma, and Laos come together at the Mekong river.
But I have seen many references to the Golden Triangle on this forum that refer to other areas/countries.
So how many Golden Triangles are there? Or is there just one, and the terminology is misused for all the others?

Dehli, Agra and Jaipur make up the Golden Triangle in India I think.

The Golden Triangle at the borders of Thailand, Laos and Burma where you visited is one, the other, as Kim says in in India.

There is a store in Bangkok called the Golden Triangle that sells wonderful hand-woven textiles and is now located in the Paragon shopping mall.

There's a 'Golden Triangle' in Kuala Lumpur as well. It's the main shopping area around Bukit Bintang.

There is a Golden Triangle in my hometown, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

To the best of my knowledge, no one has registered the trademark or copyrighted the term, so no one is “misusing it” on this forum or the hundreds of guidebooks and websites and government tourism boards which use the term. It is commonly applied in Asia to refer to areas of in both Thailand and India. There are probably other parts of the world where the terms is used as well. Sorry if you feel you have been gypped in that you are now not able to say you have not been to the ONLY Golden Triangle....maybe you can get your money back from your travel agent if he promised you that...

Cicerone, I definitely don't feel "gypped" because there is more than one Golden triangle. This was just something of interest to me. I hope my question didn't come across as a complaint, because it wasn't.

Being occaisonally politically correct I will assume that the use of the term "gypped" in this thread was not intended to disparage gypsys.

The original Golden Triangle in Thailand, Burma, Laos was so-named because the local tribal people were spread over the boundaries of the countries, so instead of exchanging money all the time, they used gold as the means of commerce. Thus the name. Other golden triangles are tourist or commercial names.
