melissa and carol, that makes 3, and growing.
btw, mahalo to melissa for posting the address of sg. this is a broil your own meat restaurant, and while they advertise smoke free, i think they tend to exagerate, so expect some smoke as the group cooks the kalbi, thus, it may be best that you don't don your best jt attire.
carol, good idea to leave on monday. btw, if you are going ua, you will probably have 5-6 hr layover in nrt, so you should check threads on what to do on a long layover in nrt. its enough time to go into narita, have a nice lunch, shop, and return for your flt to bkk.

Yes, I will have 5 hours in NRT. I was wondering what I might do for that length of time. The shopping at NRT isn't much (IMO) so it would be nice to go into the town for lunch. Great idea! Thanks for the tip.

Carol, here is the standard reference:
http://www.mgnewman.com/narita/
Last time I was at NRT there was a Yahoo! internet cafe set up with computers on the www for use for free. You could do your Hawaii trip report.

And just when I was going to thank mrwnrfl for the tip about the free internet... drat! I appreciate the link to information site about NRT.
I could probably just wander into the Star Alliance Gold lounge and have a rest. The flight from HNL to NRT is what, about 7 hours?

Oh, no, not once. Was curious so I looked it up. It's 3818 miles.
According to united.com there is no T-mobile hotspot at the Red Carpet Club at NRT. But you might be able to find wireless access elswhere for your 700m if the Yahoo! Cafe is closed.
Here is a list of internet services at NRT:

Am just considering that 5 hours is not a whole lot of time. You could spend a couple of hours in Narita city.

Do you have an easy-to-do trip into Narita suggestion? I'd be curious. Hopefully I'll have slept some on the flight from HNL so might have energy to burn rather than just sit in the airport for 5 hours.
I noted somewhere about the lines for immigration at NRT taking forever, so I should have good book with me...?
Is it worth it to exit NRT and go into town?

carol, you can do a trip into narita easily. i think i deplaned, went through immigration, and customs and was in town within 40 min. i wrote a report on this trip into town. click on my name and you should find it.
i have done this route alot, and i always go into town for a sushi lunch, then go to the supermarket and buy more sushi, excellent sashimi and sake to take with me to bankgkok, where my cousin will be waiting. we will enjoy the food as a late nite snack or early morning breakfast. unfortunately, he is on alot of meds, so i have to consume the sake by myself.(not all at once of course).
if you don't want to go into town, you can go to the rc room and use the free internet and wireless service, take a shower, have a glass of wine and just relax. just don't fall asleep and miss your flight. lol.

for an itinerary, you could find ken's trip report. also, mike newman's webpage (the link i gave before) discusses trips to Narita town.
JR has "rapid" trains hourly. Keisei has frequent trains. Less than a 10 minute trip. I don't see any JR local trains though I 100% expected to see frequent locals. So, I'd go with the Keisei trains both ways. The Keisei and JR stations are a 6 minute walk apart.

You guys are great. Thanks for all the input.
I was reading on the NRT web site that there has been a "grand opening" of part of their int'l airport. Sounds like lots of shops to explore, but on the "outside" after immigration. This might be a better option for me...
Has anyone flown thru NRT since the grand opening? I think it was about 2 weeks ago.

hi all--
really enjoyed last year's gtg and was hoping to make it down to the sake end of the table this time. also i see from the guestlist that liliha is not represented. however, big conflict: antiques roadshow is in honolulu that day, and i have tickets! must find out what's painted on my meiji imari bowls.
when is deadline for the headcount???
