Hong Kong Layover

My wife and I will have a full 12 hour day layover in Hong Kong on our way to and from ur honeymoon in South Africa. Can anyone recommend things to do during that time? Can you leave the airport (i.e. is it close enough to the city to experience it and come back)? We have basically from 10am to 10pm. Any advice is appreciated.

It takes 45 minutes to go into Hong Kong from the airport by the airport express train. Say you arrive at 10 am you'll get out of the airport by 10.15 am arrive in Hong Kong by 11.15 am and you'll pretty much have the whole day free. I've done similar outings and I would get a day room at one of the hotel in Hong Kong so that I can rest and freshen up or keep bags there. If you leave Hong Kong by 8 pm you'll have plenty of time to get to your onward flight, unless you don't have your boarding pass.

There is a hotel connected to the airport. You don't even walk out of the building.

I don't remember the name exactly but it had "Regal" in the name.

We got it cheaper by going to the travel agent kiosk on the lower level of the airport. We paid $100/day.

There are several good posts here for sites to see but the highlight to me was Victoria Peak.

If you can figure out what to do with your bags, there is a train from the airport to several locations in HK. (We had a car drive us to/from, so not sure about the travel time by train.)

You might want to consider getting off the train in Kowloon and taking the Star Ferry across the Harbor. (Not sure about station distance to ferry terminal) It is a great view of the city as you approach from the water and across from Kowloon, in general.

HK is a very easy city to navigate as the downtown area is fairly compact. You might want to plan time for a trip to Victoria Peak.

Have a great time.

The Train from the airport stops at Kowloon Station, but this is not really near the star ferry at all. If you come in by train, take the train to Honk Kong (central) . From there you can easily walk to the the Star Ferry for a ride back to Kowloon side

The transportation from Airport to Kowloon or Hong Kong island is quick and efficient. The info people at the airport should be able to direct you. Take the star ferry to the island and jump a double decker bus - it's very inexpensive (.50 or 1.00) for an unlimited ride. Take an express bus across the island to the shopping district and enjoy. Riding the buses is easy, safe and efficient.
