I went to HK November 2004. As others have said, they do not need a guide to see HK. These are the things saw and did, and am recommended.

1. The Peak
- ride the bus up and take the tram down. they'll see more taking the bus up, and experience how hk bus drivers drive up a steep narrow row.

2. longest escalator ride in the world over in hk island
wow! it's long! along the way, they will see tall buildings and small restaurants.

3. Big Buddha
it's huge! the biggest i have ever seen.

4. Lion Mountain - for hikers
take about 45 minutes to get to the top. they will see hk from the top.

5. Tea House & dim sum
excellent dim sum.

Tips:
- Napkins/tissues! always have them
- Drink gatorade if you don't want to use their small bathroom.
- Nice walking shoes. ugly crocs sandals are good shoes
- the heat - wear light-colored clothes
- many hk stores do not open til 11pm

i'm planning to go back soon for 10 days and 10 days in japan.

Cicerone, can you recommend a few reputable Web sites or travel agencies to buy ticket to japan?

Thanks!
J.

j4tay, I actually topped this for another poster named two travel who was looking for shopping info; I think the original poster is either in HOng Kong now or about to arrive, so may not be reading this anymore.

With regard to Japan, I don't have any reccos. I visit Japan as an add-on to business trips there and my company pays for the flight (a nice bonus). There is a woman named KimJapan who posts here who lives in Japan, you might want to re-post this question as a new thread either addressed to her or as a general question. She travels back and forth to the US quite a lot and might have reccos on air fare.

Cicerone, thanks for your reply.

I plan on flying to HK and stay for a few days. Then buy the ticket to Japan from a local HK company. Stay in JP for 10 days; then back to HK before flying home. Thus, I want to know any good travel agency or website operating in hk. Hopefully, I can get a better deal.

I have been reading many excellent and helpful posts by KimJapan and others.

Cicerone,
Thank you for the excellent and detailed information, much appreciated, have saved and printed to take with us!
Is there a (short)walk from the Peak that you would recommend I could undertake? We took the tram last time to the Peak, and had coffee, but otherwise didn't find much to do there. Of course the views from the viewing platforms were amazing, I just wondered ....?
thank you again,
Pauline

j_4tay: There are many travel agents in Hong Kong, and in such a competitive market, any will give you good price for fares to Japan.

To check prices and perhaps purchase online, try:

This guide is amazing!! I'm going to HK for 8 days around Thanksgiving next month. Any recommendations as to day trips, islands off the beaten path, non-touristy sights, etc? I love to shop, I'll go to the Peak, Stanley Market, etc. but I'm looking for the "inside" info. Thanks so much for any suggestions.

pep, depending on how much time you have available, you would probably enjoy a trip out to one or more of the islands. Lantau for the big Buddha and villages, Lamma ( some nice walks) and the fishing village of Cheung Chau for example. I think the latter is the closest one and the ferry trip is enjoyable. Also a day trip across to Macau is fun too and you get to experience the Portuguese/ Chinese mix. Have fun !
