Help With China Trip

We are going on a 12 day tour of China which starts in Shanghai and goes to Xian, a Yangtse River Cruise and ends in Bejing. We would like to extend our tour by about 5 days and would like advice as to what other area we might want to see in that amount of time. Our tour company offers an extention to Tibet. Or another possibility would be doing Yunnan on our own. Any other suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

I'd love to go to Tibet. But 5 days is too short. Yunnan is a good idea. A lot of English speaking people, and a beautiful place.

bonjour.
China is a very big country and there must be very beautiful places to visit. We went in Yunnan province last april and it is a fabulous place. Kunming is a beautiful large city (Daguan park, lake Dian and western hills. The place we appreciated most was definitively Lijiang. There is a lot of villages around you can visit( by car or even bicycle) and the scenery is very nice (Jade Dragon mountain).
Just came back from a China tour and would highly recommend the Guilin area. We only had a day and a half there, but would have loved more time. The scenery is beautiful and it would be a great place for hiking or biking.
