Help hotel arrangements in Rajasthan

Hello we are travelling to Rajasthan for a week, prior to Christmas (udaipur, jodhpur, jaisalmer). I am having a difficult time booking hotels in India. The travel agents usually want to give a package deal with car/guide/etc. Calling hotels directly is not helping, since they don't commit

Can any one recommend a reliable method to book hotels ? A reliable travel agency ?

Thanks in advance

A suggestion:

Write to Lily at www.jasvilas.com. She and her husband are known for helping travellers with reservations. The only catch is their contacts are mostly in the family hotels, so if you are loookng at the Taj or Oberoi properties, they may not be very effective!

www.directrooms.com have medium to high end accommodation. They are very good and we've used them several times for Asia hotel bookings.

I agree with rec for Lily at Jasvilas. She has been very helpful to us.

You could also post on www.indiamike.com for help. Best of luck to you!

You may already have your hotels booked but I have been lucky lately with calling or emailing the hotels and asking for the reservation desk. That means calling between 9:30a.m. and 5 p.m. or so Indian time which is not always easy. The front desks of the hotels do not handle reservations in my experience and will ask you to call later. I would just keep trying.
Just a day ago I was able to get a booking at Deogarh for one night. I had the possibility of 2 nights at Udai Kothi for Dec. 22 to 24, available two days ago, and would have loved to take it but could not change my reservation in Jaisalmer. One Saturday we were able to book 2 rooms at Gorbandh when the day before I was told they were booked. We now have a confirmation email. You might try calling CRS 91-294-2528008 for Gorbandh in Jaisalmer and several hotels in Udaipur. For locating, although frustrating, try http://tamilnadu.bsnl.co.in/Enquiry/ndq/nationaldir.htm
to get the latest hotel numbers. Many times the listed numbers in guidebooks and even on the web are out of date. When the directory can't find anything which you know is there, try just typing hotel. Having said all this, I'd love to get a reservation at Fort Rajwada in Jaisalmer or Umaid Bhawan in Jodhpur!
