Hanoi trip in just 2 weeks! Advice?

Thanks to the fodorites who have answered my questions.

We'll be in Hanoi for 7 nights and so far, only the first 3 nights are definitely booked (Sofitel metropole). During this time, we plan to do a 1/2 day with Hanoi kids, perhaps a tour with Hidden Hanoi and see some of the sights on our own.

Here's where I'd love some advice. We're debating on 1 or 2 nights aboard a junk to Halong Bay. If we do 1 night, we are also considering spending 1 night on one of the islands... just for a different experience.

Then the last 2 nights, we were thinking the Intercontinel. I understand this is a big far from Old Quarter and main sightseeing... but according to TA, it's very romantic, quiet etc.

Is this too much down time? Should we go back to the Sofitel for the last 2 nights?

What else would you suggest we not miss while in Hanoi?

thanks bunch!

Please come back and do a report so we know how you get on. I am planning to use Hanoi kids and Hidden Hanoi too so will be really interested in your opinion.

Sure, I'll let you know how it goes.
We'll actually be gone for 2 weeks, spending another 7 nights in Bangkok.
I'm hoping some folks who have been will have good advice. I've read through many older posts as well as many TR but I'm afraid my brain is mush and I can only remember some of the information and now don't have time to go back and re-read everything.

I can't see spending more than one night on Halong Bay whether its on a boat or on an island - I think you'll be bored if you do.

I would return to the Metropole. I think there is a benefit to staying at the same hotel for your entire time in Hanoi - it will be like returning "home" for you, the hotel staff will be familiar with your needs and you can store your luggage there while you are at Halong Bay. Are you staying on the Club Floor at the Metropole?

Do try and get out of Hanoi and visit some of the little villages on the outskirts - you will not see these on the drive to Halong Bay.

another thing to consider, is that you could leave most of your stuff in hanoi at the hotel and only take essentials for the overnite (s).... i too vote one night...

Thanks, already got your restaurant list for bkk. We're staying at the Pen.

Craig, yes, the club level.

Still trying to decide on the junk. I think we're looking at Bhaya and Prince II.
