Just wondering about the best way to get from the Airport to Sofitel Legend Hotel. The hotel has transfers for US$100 which seem very excessive when I have seen some other folks recommending private car transfer services for US$12.

Can I get a transfer service at the airport rather than a taxi or do I have to pre-book it?

No private car had with this price...
The taxi from Noi Bai airport to Hanoi center is lowest about 15usd...

I would just get a taxi. There's a taxi desk where you prepay the fare so no "scenic" route etc.

I'm just want to give you some more information about the airport transfer in Hanoi as below:
Private car should cost around 25$ to 30$/one way for the airport transfer. Taxi to airport from Hanoi will cost you about 12$ but if you travel from airpt to the city the fare will be about 17$ ( Airpt taxi number (04.38866666)
If you are lucky enough you might met some guys who hang around the arrival lounge to wait for foreigners who want to take a taxi to Hanoi.They usually offer you a bit cheaper price but it's not very safe to travel this way as many people have scams with the drivers who would try to rip them off.
To save the money some people would travel with shuttle van which is organised by VN air to drop paeople off at No1 Quang Trung street, from here it will cost you about 1,5 $ to get to the Metrople hotel. Fare for the shuttle is only about 2,5$ or 50,000 VND but I will not recommend this if you travel with suit cases as it's quite squeezy on this type of van.
