Thanks friends! Glad you enjoyed them. Nywoman, we had pretty good weather despite the haze in the air.
Syl, we enjoyed meeting you too. Those dumplings we had in Beijing were great, weren't they! Say hello to your family for us.
I just uploaded my Forbidden City photos here:

I am very surprised how uncrowded Hangzhou seems to be in your photos. From my own experience, as well as my family's, all the major attractions are usually very crowded, regardless of when they went.

Thanks for all your wonderful photos and report. Did not go to Hangzhou but all the others you have posted really bring out the best of all the places we visited also.
Weren't the crowds at the Forbidden City unbelievable?! Course it was about 30 degrees the day we were there - just last Sunday!
Thanks again

rkkwan,
No, Hangzhou was not crowded. I think it was due to the festival we ran into the first day. That was crowded with people with all the food vendors. Even Hefang street was crowded.
The Forbidden city was extremely crowded and my guess was that since it was the weekend and the end of the national holiday, many stayed in Beijing to see the sights over the weekend. I couldn't get any decent shots of the FC because of the crowds.

I'm also afraid that a great deal of Huanglongxi isn't more than 5 year's old - like the town gate and bridges in the photos - they have all been built, from scratch, in the last couple of years. They actually knocked down some of the old to build the new - arghhhhhhhhhh!!!
To find the real old stuff look at the paving stones - its easy to see which is the ancient.

Yes, I made the mistake: it's a 45 minute drive south of Chengdu! My guide told me that a lot of the place was re-built, but hopefully they re-built it to look like the original town.

Shanghainese,
On the way to the entrance of the FC, I remember walking down a pathway lined with weeping willows on one side & that river on the other side. The reflection of the houses on the water was memorable.

Syl is correct. The first photo was taken near the FC from the east side of the entrance. I know that the FC is surrounded by a moat/water. I had seen photos of the buildings along the water. So ancient looking!
"rhkkmk: fantastic...thanks"
Thanks!
