Continued....so I stayed awake and kept the news on and then bits and pieces came through on both CNN and the BBC. Some hours later I heard sounds, and looked out onto the direction of the terrace and noticed fireworks going off to the south of me...river direction. My apartment faces west. As I was standing out on my terrace, in my pajamas, and looking at the fireworks, CNN was reporting that New Year's Eve celebrations had been cancelled in Bangkok. Last year, there were lots of fireworks coming from the north and a few from the west.Lsst night, there were a few from the north, but I didn't notice any from the west. But, the ones from the south, lasted a solid 15 minutes.

So, I went back inside, climbed into bed, and finished watching the fireworks from bed, while watching the news, too.

The reports here mention that there were five bombs, although CNN reported seven. One was in Nonthaburi.... one at a bus stop near Victory Monument...the first one...which reportedly went off at 6:30PM... one in a trashcan at the main market in Klontoey....my building address is Klongtoey, another bomb was reported in a traffic police booth in Saphan Kwai...one skytrain stop before Mo Chit... another on Sukumvit, soi 62....for you Bangkok travelers... Sukumvit, soi 63 is at Ekkamai, but is opposite soi, 42...so soi 62 must be somewhere near On Nut. I'm at Prom Phong which is one stop...about a minute...from Thonglor and Ekkamai is one stop past Thonglor...then there are about two more stations before the end of the west skytrain line which ends at On Nut. The other bomb was reported in a parking lot at Seacon Square department store on Sri Nakharin Road. To be continued....

It was reported that the bombs were within a 15-minute span starting with the first one at 6:30PM at Victory Monument.

So dfar it has been ruled out that this is in connectio with the long-going insurgency in the south, but it's thought to be the works of opponents of the military coup which ousted Thaksin.

As for celebrations, it was reported that Central World Plaza moved the celebration up three hours and then folks had to clear out and that the major of Bangkok spoke to tens of thousands of folks packed on Rajadamri Road. That's my old neighborhood, remember...the Four Seasons. Now, I don't know how that many people could be crowded in that road.

My Thai freind and I had just been at Central World Plaza on Saturday and she told me that the whole road in front was to be closed for the celebration. When she called me this morning she said that there was a report that a bomb had also gone off in the canal that runs almost along side of the Central World Plaza area. We had walked by that canal on Saturday because we went shopping in the area near the Indra regent hotel/Pratunum Market and walked from there to Central World Plaza.

So,Saturday evening, my Thai friend and I went to a restaurant called, California Circle, which I think has been renamed to "Circle" since that's all that was on the sign. I found out about it when I googled Koi restaurant to get Koi's phone number. There was an article done on both Koi and California Circle and they both got high ratings.

The restaurant is located at 20/27-29 Ruam Rudee Tel.02.650.8047.8. You just skytrain to Ploenchit and then walk about 250 meters out Ruam Rudee. It's right across from the Chateau de Bangkok Serviced Apartment building where I stayed for a night some years ago.I never noticed the restaurant before. It's right before you get to Chateau de Bangkok if coming from Ploenchit skytrain station. It's on the right side of the street.

We went early...as I like to eat early...and when the restaurant is empty. The restaurant has been there for 12 years, but has gone through a major renovation within the last seven months. The new chef has been there for 7 months. He's Chinese and from Toronto. He came over to our table and we talked for a long time. That's when he mentioned that he was from Toronto, but had been in California before. I just said to him," Toronto... Close enough. It's the same continent". He laughed.

The food is not only Californian food. It's American food from different regions. That's probably why it's now just called, "Circle". There was also Jambalaya on the menu. But I had California style food. The chef worked around my corn and dairy food allergy.

He sent out a big salad of mesclun greens which was delicious and which I was more than happy to see. Then he grilled me a thick piece of king fish which was sat in the middle of a picante, tomato-based sauce... delicious. He also did mashed potatoes(since I couldn't have the southwestern style cornmeal mash). The mashed potatoes came with spinach and more mesclun greens. And there was a fresh-baked loaf of bread which I was really glad to see....so glad to see that after the meal he presented me with two loaves to take home. He makes it fresh at the restaurant. I also had my leftover loaf wrapped up to go.

For dessert I had roasted, pumpkin pie which was heavenly. I wanted to also try the apple and fig pie, but was too stuffed. My Thai friend had salmon which she said was quite good although her first choice was Koi restaurant where she had also ordered salmon.

So, I recommend it when you're at the point of wanting some good, home food. And the chef will work with you on fixing the food the way you'd like it. The restaurant is upstairs and is very nice looking. The bar is downstairs. It's open from 2PM to midnight...continuous service.

Well, that's about all I can type today. It's now 2:09PM and I'm crosseyed. I need to go back to my apartment and have some lunch. I'm starved. Thank goodness my local market Emporium Gourmet carried Amy's frozen food products. I eat them regularly at home. The company is out os Petaluma,California. I buy the products at Whole Foods at home. So, I'm popping my tofu lasagne in the oven and heating up a lof of that leftover bread from the restaurant...delicious. It's awful that I haven't gone to any Thai restaurants in nearly 3 weeks. But, I can eat Thai food at home...which I do at least once a week. I've basically been cooking my meals at home. I can cook Thai food. Happy Travels!

Please excuse some of the typos in my above post that I just noticed. I'm pretty blurry-eyed now. Oh, and If you want to read the reviews for California Circle restaurant, you can go on google and type in...California Circle, Ruam Rudee, Bangkok, Thailand...and it should pop up...or you can type in...Koi restaurant, Bangkok, Thailand...since the article was on both restaurants. Happy Travels!

Guen, thanks for the detail on the bombing locations. Hopefully everything will be back to normal by mid-February when we return to Bangkok. For our first few days we will be staying at the Intercontinental which is quite close to where one of the bombs exploded.

It's good to know that you are safe and sound after the terrible events on New Years Eve in Bangkok. But it also sounds like the knee is still giving you problems. Maybe time for a 1-hour foot/leg massage?? Or maybe a trip to Bumrungrad to get some meds.

Thanks for the information on "new" restaurants that you are enjoying. We are always on the lookout for something different... although we usually try to eat Thai food since we can't get it in "podunk junction" here in downstate Illinois!! lol

DH and Bradinbangkok and I were talking last night about hoping to be back at Phuket (at Mom Tri's) for the new year festivities at the end of 2007! I hope we can manage it...

G-there was little doubt that you would keep moving forward at your usual frenetic pace. Keep the cards and letters coming.

Guenmai and mcbeanie -- Finally back in US, through with pre-planned (routine) medical procedures, New Years festivities, etc. -- and very sorry to have missed you two on Dec. 22 in BKK. Unfortunately, the pre- and post-wedding family activity interfered with that plan and by the time I realized it I had no time to get to the Internet to let you know. I'm glad the two of you were able to connect, however -- and sorry to hear of Guenmai's hobbling!

I'll post a trip report next weekend, I promise! The information from this board was invaluable in helping us make our plans.

One preview -- the morning cooking class at Blue Elephant (which starts with a trip to the food market) was a real treat! Highly recommended...

Thanks for all the well wishes, folks. So, the city is a buzz and folks are basically going on with their daily lives. The mall here is full of folks. One must remember that this is a Buddhist country and folks deal with these situations a bit differently than one might deal with them in the west. Yes, folks are very concerned about the bombing event and deeply mourn the loss of those killed, but there is no 24/7 type of TV coverage about it as there would be at home. You know how things are at home...every station would have coverage and the news coverage would have folks terrified to leave their homes. Not so here. My Thai friend called this morning and sounded very calm and has to go back to work tomorrow(her vacation will be over) so she will go back to work.

Bob...poor Bob...once again you have me cracking up. Anyhow, I dropped by your jeweler in soi 4, Nana. You know how I hate to go to Nana. The scene from the bar across the street from the hotel is really sad and also the situation in the lobby of the hotel...and you know what I mean. So, the folks at your jewelry store were really nice. The rubies were very nice, but I thought quite expensive. I had to pass on the sapphires....SJ wins on sapphires. But, it's always good to know of different places.

So, Lucy came over yesterday and we had a really good time. We hung around the apartment for a while and talked and laughed. Then we went into the mall to the cake restaurant and had some cake and more conversation and laughter. We know each other from both Hawaii and Boston.

So, I called Bumrungrad this morning and made an appointment for tomorrow. Since I have a medical card/number with them, I just gave the phone receptionist the number over the phone and my name popped up in the system and everything was set up. I think I kind of overdid it on Friday and Saturday when I was out all day walking around.

Oh, you know how every big hotel and restaurant in town seems to have a huge New Year's Eve dinner. Well, I saw the prices for the celebrations at the Pen and my mouth went into lockjaw.
1)The Pool...7-course New Year Set Menu...price 45,000 baht per couple
2)The Pen Lawn&Terrace:Gala Dinner Buffet...price 12,800 baht per person
3)The Lobby Terrace-7-course New Year Set Menu...price 12,800 baht per person
4)Jesters:10-course New Year Set Menu...price 9,800 baht per person
5)Thiptara: 6-course Thai Set Menu...price 9,800 baht per person
6)Mei Jiang: 8-course Chinese Festive Set Menu...price 8,800 baht per person

Well, my New Year's Eve menu consisted of Amy's, frozen-food section, tofu lasagne, left over bread from California Circle Restaurant, apple juice and tonic water cocktail, and coconut milk ice cream along with the fabulous city view from my terrace...price...PRICELESS! Smiles. Happy Travels!

I was just having a new year's chat to my friend at the Pen - he is manager of the River Terrace. He said they had been busy for New Year functions and the hotel was full. So obviously there are some folk willing to pay those prices. Much as I love the Pen, I'm with you Guenmai - I think I'd be opting for the food at home with a view and saving all that dosh for something else!!!! Another bag perhaps?

Hope you got on okay at the hospital.

Bob...Bob....I'm a youngin'. I was in elementary school most of the 60s. Only Father Time would remember such. Smiles.
Mary...yes, that could be shopping money instead of food money. I agree.
James...the dentist? Ouch.

So, folks...I went to my appointment at Bumrungrad which was very stress free. Just the thought of a medical facility causes me stress. I didn't sleep well last night just thinking about it. But, they were so calm over there until it calmed me and my blood pressure was 120/90 which I was told was normal. It probably wouldn't have been that had I gone to my medical facility at home.

So, I had a 1PM appointment and left my building at 12 noon by taxi. I arrived at 12:10PM. Sukumvit was a breeze as folks were probably already at work and some are still on vacation.

I entered the orthopedic section at 12:15, had vitals taken at 12:30PM, chatted with a man from Alaska who also had a twisted knee/leg, and the doctor saw me at 12:45PM....15 minutes early. He did his exam...no awful hospital gown. I had my regular clothes on so I didn't feel like I was in a hospital which reduced my stress considerably. Then he said that, from his exam, he suspected a torn medial mescus(sp?)and that if that's it I would need surgery to repair it. I looked at him in shock...He then said that he could be wrong and that it might not be that and that I might not need a surgery, but that's what he suspects the problem is. So, I'm to monitor it and if in 3-4 weeeks I still have the problem, then that's probably what it is. He said to see a doctor at home about it since I leave soon. But, he was VERY calming. I was then prescribed some oral medication for pain and reducing inflamation. He took me over to his wall charts and explained everyting to me using the chart pictures. I left his office around 1:00PM. There were tons of patients in the waiting room when I arrived and the receptionist and nurse apologized for it being so crowded and busy. I was still seen 15 minutes early and when I left, nearly every patient had been cleared out.

After my exam, I went to the cashier where I paid for the services and medication with my Bangkok Bank debit card since the price was so low. The medication was waiting for me at the cashier so no need to go to a pharmacy.

For those of you wondering about the cost...it was 120 baht for the facility fee...about $3.33 at today's exchange rate. Then the doctor's fee was 800 baht...around $22.22 and the medication was 640 baht...around $17.77. I was prescribed 10...400mg each, tablets of Prexige/Lumiracoxib and 10 tablets of 200 mg. each of Idarac. The medication was from New Zealand. I don't know how much this medication would cost at home. I've e-mailed my sister about my experience. She and her husband are doctors.

So for now, I'll take my meds to reduce the inflamation and pain and then pray that it's just a pull and not a tear. The day before I left for BK, it was nearly as good as healed until later that day I re-injured it and had to start all over again. The first injury took a good 3 weeks before I was feeling good. But, I wasn't walking on the injury like I've been walking on it here. I have a car at home.
Oh, I forgot to add that...Bumrungrad has a free shuttle/van service that leaves from Nana station every twenty minutes and goes to the hospital. It also goes from the hospital to Nana Station. When at the hospital, and you want to go back to Nana station, you walk out of the main, lobby door and turn right. Walk to the end of the walkway and you'll see the shuttle schedule. Just wait there. It comes at 00/20/ and 40 on the hour and the last one leaves at 8PM. It'll drop you off on Sukumvit, right next to the up escalator to Nana Station on the north side of Sukumvit, where the odd numbered sois are. I think it picks patients up at that spot to take them to the hospital, too.

Well, I'd better go. I've been at this computer for over two and a half hours because before getting on the forum, I had to e-mail friends/family. Take care. Happy Travels!

Bob...My days are nearing an end. Three weeks went by very quickly. The driver will come for me tomorrow.

I just noticed a very long thread on safety in Bangkok. I don't have time to read it today as I'm out of computer time as of now. But, there's probably more discussion on that thread than there is here. Take care. Happy Travels!
