Good Places to buy fabric other than Silk

We are in Bangkok/Chaing Mai in Feb. and while I have read about numerous places to get silk I also know that there is some great cotton to be purchased. Does anyone have any favourite places to search for non silk fabrics? Thanks Marg

In Bangkok - the Prahurat (or Indian ) market is the place to go. Its at one end of Chinatown so if you are in a taxi ask for the Indian Market or Old Siam (which is a shopping mall). There are literally hundreds of stalls - you need to work your way into the market from the street through the small lanes - they have everything from sari material to cotton shirting to linings to suiting to the lovely thai cotton that comes only in lengths (1.8mt or 3.6mt)that are used for the thai skirts. From there you can also go down Sempeng Lane which also has lots of fabric (mainly cotton shirting) but also lots and lots of shops selling threads, buttons etc.

Its very hot and humid and crowded in there so just take it slowly. Most of it doesn't get going until 10.00am but I'm usually a bit earlier than that to start looking around and get the "early morning" quiet when they first open.
