Do you wear your good jewelry to Thailand or leave it at home?

I'm mostly thinking of my engagement ring and wedding band.

I've heard many stories and therefore tend to leave the real stuff at home when traveling overseas, but this is our honeymoon and we're staying at nice hotels (BKK and Ao Nang)...

Opinions?

I tend to leave my nice stuff at home. I have a simple inexpensive gold band I wear as my wedding ring when I travel.
I'm not so much worried about theft as I am about loss. Would hate to lose it in the ocean or something like that. Still, theft is a possibility where ever you travel (and at home I suppose) so I don't want to give anyone any added incentive.

Maybe you could just wear your wedding band and leave the diamonds at home?

If it's a huge diamond, leave it at home. Otherwise, I would wear it. Is it insured???

I have lived and traveled in Asia for more than 10 years and have never heard any story of any one being robbed and having their jewelry taken, so I don't know what "stories" you are referring to. In terms of street crime, Asia is statistically much safer than most US cities. I have also never heard of anyone having jewelry taken from a hotel room, whether in a safe or not. I personally have never had any experience with this, the only place I have ever been mugged and pick pocketed is in the US.

When out sightseeing in cities, you would take normal precautions with your purse and wallet of course as you would in any place where people congregate, but people are not going to be trying to take jewelry off of your fingers.

If the ring does not fit properly and will become loose in the water, then you might want to have it sized or consider leaving it at home if for some reason you are not comfortable leaving it in a hotel safe.

I always travel with good jewelry. I leave it in a hotel safe. It is also insured. None of it of great sentimental value like a wedding ring, however, so I agree with Kathie that if you are afraid of losing it, then leave it at home. I would not however be afraid of theft.

I wear my engagement ring 'inside out' when walking around both home and away if I am not wearing gloves - I mean I turn the stone into my palm. I do it automatically now as I walk outside - but the reason for that is stories of thefts in London not Asia. If you are worried about losing your engagement ring though - leave it at home. A friend who has an unfeasibly large rock has had a copy made with a non-precious stone so that she can be wear that when she is uncomfortable wearing the real thing.

I tend to leave mine at home because of a different reason. In high humidity if I am out and about all day walking around my hands will tend to swell a bit and I want to take my rings off. I don't want to then have to think about what I did with the ring. But since I am use to wearing one I wear something different that is actually a little looser and that I wouldn't be too bothered about if I did loose.

my wife used to leave everything at home....now she brings two pairs of earing, one decent and one cheap and simple....she wears her gold braclets---the everyday ones....she wears her normal rings....

thais have tons of jewelry and love to wear it...

theft is not a problem unless you leave it laying around in your room unattended and then it is not usually a problem either.....we do not leave anything out in our room for temtation even in 5 star places and that includes tickets, cameras, wallets, jewelry....that is what the safe if for---use it!!!

My plan is to leave all my jewelry, except for simple watch and cheap earrings, at home. Not a safety issue, my only reason is I plan to do some jewelry shopping while there and thought I'd wear my new finds. Especially rings, then I'm not taking (or trying to take) off my jewels to try on potential new purchases.

I think I will leave the rock at home and wear the band--except in the water!

I know--I shouldn't listen to vague stories of theft--and I live in NYC so I know about crime vs. people's conceptions of crime.
