Gemstones in Siem Reap

Has anyone found any good jewellers in Siem Reap. I am primarily interested in local gemstones such as zircons, saphires or rubies.

Thanks

lisa

Bangkok is know for the gem scams. I've met more than a few who have fallen prey to them. BE careful!

Many of us have reliable jewelers we've used for many years in Bangkok.

While I'm pretty savvy about gems, I don't think I'd buy in Siem Reap.

Most of the sapphires and rubies common to Cambodia are mine around Pailin in the north west. Most are exported to Thailand so it is unlikely you will find any bargains in SR - in fact it highly likely, unless you are an epert that you will get ripped off.

determining the origin of gems is very difficult, although if you aer in a mining/rough stone area, the stones are most likely from that area. BUT, the choice of faceted gems would be minimal. most rough would be sent to cutter and finishers in BKK. if you are only going to be in Siem Reap then that is the extent of your market (but it wont be too good for you the buyer). BKK there is a gem store on every street corner. if you search on here for recommended gem stores you will be better off from fodorites prior buying experience. you should do some research on gems you would like to consider. most saphires and rubies you will see are commercial grade (nice but not top gem quality) and certainly better jewelery than in the UA if you like 18K or higher. even though zircon is mined in SE Asia (cambodia, vietnam, and myanmar), it is not a common gem found retailin BKK. you can check on jewelery TV for zircon and if you buy the gemstone, take it with you to BKK and have it fashioned into whatever jewelry you want. but so you research before you go!

Beware, deep red stones will be passed off as rubies.

oz, are you referring to garnets being passed off as rubies? And did you experience this in Siem Reap?

No it's a brighter red, Kathie. I suspect they were heat treated zirconians or something. Beautiful colour but I'm philosophical about these things as long as the locals benefit. Bought it from quite a big gem store in SR.

Thank you all. I had the thought that since some of these stones were mined in cambodia, i might find good deals there. But it sounds i will buy in BKK instead.
