Trains from Singapore to KL, they also stop at various locations. You can bus to Johor Bharu and then take bus services north. Flight takes about 40-50 minutes, very frequent. Malacca is interesting on the way.

I did the train journey a few years ago and whilst the plantations are interesting for a short while, they then get a bit boring. I would not do it again and go with Sara Rey's recommendation.

I did it by bus a couple of years ago. Very cheap and comfortable.

I've done the train from Singapore and it gets a bit boring after awhile. Have flown and that's easy as pie. But I would take one of the buses to Malaca and stay a day or so there as it is really beautiful and unique. Then bus on up to KL. Simple. I love Malaysia and have been several times.

Grab the NICE luxury bus from Hotel Royal, Newton Rd. Cost SGD30-40 and takes 4 hours. The train costs SGD55 and takes 6 hours. Same scenery.

If you are a Senior Citizen (I think that the age for Malaysia is 60), you can ride the train for half price. Take a good book though, it is a long, but comfortable trip.

Malaysia has quite a few discounts for us Old Senior Farts. Love it.
