Wedok, sounds like a freighter trip could be perfect.
If you like writing it would be a good opportunity and with perhaps 6-10 other passengers you could get some great ideas, perhaps write a fictional book about a group of people on a freighter cruise to Shanghai!!
Those sites all said daily cost was around US$85-120 which does not sound 'so bad'. Meals included. The ships seem to stay at ports longer than cruise ships, they would dock I guess in the freighter areas.
Don't forget to cjheck the normal cruise ships from West Coast to Asia, for that you need to cruise websites.

Wedok - my heart goes out to you. I don't understand the acronym AOB but I do understand your anxiety.
Your comments about passing through US airports post 11/9 resonates.
I am wondering about your ultimate destination - Surabaya. It must surely be possible to get there from Singapore. Surely?
So maybe you need to look at freighters from a European port? Where? No idea really. Southampton, Rotterdam; other UK or Dutch ports.
Getting across the Atlantic is another question but possibly the easiest of all if you have money.
As indicated before, I wish it were still possible to travel by sea in a non-luxe way. Just as a means of getting from A to B.
I don't suppose it will help much but you might get some useful info about sailings and possibilies by looking at Lloyds List.

James A- Thanks for posting the company from right here in Pasadena. I was racking my brains trying to remember the name of the place. I remember more than a decade and a half ago, someone I knew of taking a freighter to some very far away place. If my memory comes back, maybe I'll remember who it was. Happy Travels!

Two irrefutable methods ought to work. 1st, discover which ship land in Vancouver and check with those lines for psgr availability. 2nd If you can get the shipping news from the Singapore daily, once a week (I think Mondays) they list the ships leaving and destinations. You could contact those lines. You could not get much closer to Jakarta than Sin. But that is fairly close. As a consumer of sea Container freight, I cannot even imagine that the newer ships that run on such a tight schedule & handle Millions of dollars in containers a day, want to horse around keeping passengers happy when it is not their business. Tell me I am wrong - but in 2008 only a rust bucket scow would waste time on psgrs who could be better accomodated on a cruise ship.
