Four (4+) Star Hotel near Ubud
We are interested in a resort, not a B&B or villa, within 2-3 miles of Ubud center that offers very nice A/C sleeping rooms in a 15-40 unit complex that is very well maintained for $175-$200 USD. Since we will be touring from about 9-5 extensive hotel facilirties are not importance but a friendly staff and attractive grounds would be a plus. After a day of touring, considering we are in our mid-60's, if it had a good restaurant or there were a few good restaurants within 2-3 blocks that would be ideal. Though we stayed at the Four Seasons-Sayan and loved it on our last 2 visits to Bali the rest our our 3 week trip is costly so we decided to go for more modest accommmodations for this 3 night visit. Ideas?.

Alam Sari is a good choice. Pretty location, good management, nice restaurant. Komeneka Tanggayuda is another option with similar ambience.
I'd also consider the Alila, beautiful spacious setting (same river valley as the 4S) with lots of resort amenities. The food is excellent though very pricy for Ubud. I like the contemporary architecture and design, but it's not to everyone's taste.

marmot; Have you stayed at Alila? It looks quite nice and comtemporary is just the style of our home.We actually once bought a piece of furniture from a Four Season's in Punta Mita Mexico (everything at FS's are for sale or can be reproduced). A Superior room is $275 with tax/service which is half the Four Seson's-Sayan. A very comfortable bed, ample size and decent sized bathroom would fit the bill.I assume if you stayed there you can comment? Thanks.

Yes, I've stayed at the Alila several times in the past 16 years. It used to called the Chedi and is loosely affiliated with the group that owns the Legian/Chedis and the Amans. The Alilas are their lowest price tier, but still maintain the refined aesthetic of the other brands. They are all designed by well known architects, minimalist with subtle Balinese touches.
The rooms are smallish, but, to me, very well designed, almost Japanese in feeling. Upstairs rooms have a balcony, downstairs have a terrace.
The resort has a serene atmosphere, spacious grounds, beautiful views, a beautiful restaurant and one of the nicest pools anywhere. As I wrote earlier, the restaurant is relatively expensive, especially when compared to non-hotel options in Ubud itself. Same for the spa.
If you choose to stay outside of Ubud, you will pretty much have to go with your resort's restaurant or "commute" to town. The Alila has an Ubud shuttle, but as I remember it, it wasn't too frequent or convenient. You could take a car to the other Ayang river resorts for dinner, but they are also quite pricy.

I read the reviews of the Alila Ubud on Trip Advisor and people seem to love it or hate it. My experience was mostly good, but I agree the service and maintenance at times needed improvement. The beautiful setting compensated, though.
Since you've mentioned knee issues, please be aware that there are a fair amount of stairs to negotiate.
The best room is suite 103. One of the best, I think, in all of Bali. But it may be getting into another price range.
