Gina_07,
Cool... I'll try to get there at 6am. It'll be perfect I can turn in early the night before.
Thansk for the suggestion on Gonpachi Restuarant.. I saw the photos and it looks awesome! Anything you suggest to order?

I know someone suggested that I should stay at the Sumiyoshi Ryokan. Which looks great!!
But I was wondering if there's a place with a hot spring? I would love to try an outside hot spring. I heard that an experience I must try is dipping into a hot spring while it's winter is a must.
I am leaning toward staying at Sumiyoshi Ryokan but is there a hot spring I can visit in the area? Is Takayama far from Hakone?
Should this be a new thread? Haa thanks guys!

Here is Tsukiji's official page and rules. http://www.tsukiji-market.or.jp/youk..._e/24hours.htm

The Peninsula hotel runs a tour, 2 - 4 people, ¥24,000 per person, 2 hours, begins 6 AM. http://www.peninsula.com/Tokyo/en/Me...1B7E9D2F3.ashx

http://homepage3.nifty.com/tokyowork...ijiTourEng.htm is ¥7500 per person, and may or may not be able to get you in to see the tuna auction.

http://www.tsukijitour.com/ ¥10,000 per person for auction tour, but does not specify that it is tuna auction, so likely that it is other fish instead.

There are lots more if you just google tsukiji tour.

In 7 days, you are also going to Takayama and Hakone?

Hakone has onsen right there, in just about every hotel. Takayama city ryokan and hotels will have baths, but not onsen. Nearby is famous Gero Onsen.

But that leads back to your time constraints.

I would do a single overnight to Hakone from Tokyo. Stay in a nice place with a good onsen and good food.

Darn!! So we can’t wander around the market anymore. We have to take a tour? Shame but it’s for the best. I would hate to disrupt the auction and the lifestyle.
It’s a shame most tours have a minimum of 4 people. But I was reading tourist cant’ even wander with a tour group. I need to do more research.
Just in case for anyone reading this. I found a tour with the min. of 2 people…
http://www.tctour.co.jp/plan/tokyo/tuna_auction.html

So if anyone would like to join me or if I can join them for a Friday tour.. let me know. Thanks

Yea I think I’ll be visiting Hakone and try to stay at a Ryokan with a onsen (I’m guessing this is a hot spring). Do you have any suggestions?

A overnight train to Hakone? I didn’t know it would take that long. Can I get there using a JR pass or is there a better alternate?

You can wander around the market. You cannot wander around the tuna auction area.

The train to Hakone takes less than 2 hours. I am saying to spend a night there. Using JR, you first go to Odawara, then you have to change to Odakyu lines (For which the JR Pass is not valid). You can buy a Hakone Free pass in Odawara. Or you can buy a Hakone Free Pass for a bit more in Shinjuku and it will cover the train to the area as well. Either way is fine. The whole area is an exercise in modes of transportation, but all is easy to use.

In September, we spent a night at Lalaca in Gora, which I think is an excellent value place. For about ¥12,000 per person, you get room, dinner and breakfast. The food is outstanding. The bath is real onsen, though only one tub, as it is a very small hotel. If you want more tubs in the bath, you will need to spend a bit more.

Of the towns in the Hakone area, I prefer Gora to the others because it is small, without huge crowds (though don't get me wrong, it is totally a tourist town).

Really.. but the big thing about the market is the Tuna auction, right?
Whew.. thanks for the directions to get to Hakone. I might have ended up India…Just Kidding.
I looked up Lalaca in Gora and the place looks awesome. It is a shame that from the looks of it they have a minimum of 2 people per room and dinner. I eat a lot but not that much. Haa.. Plus looks like their rate went up.
So a day in Hakone is sufficient?

Lalaca's rates start at ¥10.800 per person and have not changed at all. They may take singles if they are not fully booked, you can e-mail them and ask if you like. Not sure what you mean about not eating that much...for two people? If they will take you as a single then you won't get double food. 15th - 18th December have wide open availability there (I used their calendar in Japanese to see that).

www.lalaca.com is their website, and there is an English version and you can make a reservation request in English. The also are reservable via some booking agents in English (Forget which ones now), but when I checked for our stay in September the booking agents were much more expensive than simply making a direct booking. The owner also speaks pretty good English should you want to call them (pay attention to the time difference and don't call during breakfast or dinner time.
