Thanks so much for all of the well wishes.. interestingly, to be quite honest, it never occured to me to scope out the local hospitals for quality.. and this from a person who has been to both Egypt and Africa! Definately I would do that if I had it to do over... that is one thing, in this situation all of the planning in the world.. still leaves room for massive improvisation . Actually I did have airlift insurance.. but the problem was my wound was not in and of itself, life threatening, it always seemed to be a case, of "well, we can get you to the next place and they can fix you up" it wasn't like having to fly to France for critial spinal surgery or anything like that. It was the secondary infection that sent us down the river.. and that is more of a slow burn as opposed to a speedy emergency... ah well, hindsight is 20/20 so they say.. now... who knows anything about India???

Thanks for sharing your harrowing experience and your amazingly positive attitude and spirit. Incredible how things can change and turn around so quickly -- from a totally fun vacation to a nightmare experience, and from almost certain loss of a leg to a saved leg. So glad to know all ended well, and wishing you a happy & HEALTHY 2007.

Good to hear all is turning out in regards to your health. It must have been frightening to say the least!
Could you please tell me more about what was included in the tour Tong took you on to the fishing village. How long to it go for and what would be the approx cost. Is it far from the city or just in the Klongs?
thank you for your responses when you have time - Merry Christmas.

Cosmo, if you are interested in Tong's tour to "the secret place" there have been extensive and detailed reports of it, most recently by Bob (rhkkmk) and Andy (GPanda). Do a search here and you'll find it. It is outside of Bangkok, not on the klongs.

Elephant Parks looks good. A near amputation is incredible and I'm sure you
are still suffering. I cannot imagine how awful the whole thing must have been. What a 10 year anniversary experience.

Sorry to hear about your experience, but you truly have an amazing spirit, like the others have mentioned. I'm heading to Thailand in Feb, and I'll think twice before trying any water sports or such activities.

Thanks Kathie for the suggestions to search Bob and or Andy's post... but if you stop for a minute and re think that.... searching their posts which tend to go into the 100 postings is monumental for finding one little point hee hee... I could do a world trip before I finish reading their epilogues.
So Bob or Andy if your listening out there.. could you please post info on your Tong fishing village tour. Where what time and cost please?.
I did search but spent an hour having punched in Tong and got a lot of non related posts
thank you

Cosmo-my Tong portion is towards the end and begins with a ^:00 a.m. pick up. Bob's Tong portion is also towards the end of the thread as currently constituted. However, if you're thinking of using Tong, just go ahead and book her. You can E-mail her with your desired itinerary and work it out later. You won't be disappointed.

Cosmo, apparently I wasn't clear. Both Bob and Andy have posted recent (in the last couple of weeks) reports on their trips to Thailand. I was suggesting you look at those reports. It's so true that if you just clicked on their names you'd get thousands of posts!

Thyra - Thankfully your story has a happy ending - My husband & I travel alot and after a near episode which involved my husband's leg and a cab in Italy - I never travel without medical evacuation insurance. It is relatively inexpensive and gives me peace of mind. I did extensive research and have found for us that Medjet Assist offers the best coverage.
Again, best wishes for a great Holiday and happy travels!

Oh Thyra, what a truly awful experience. I'm so glad to read there is a good ending and that your leg was saved. Other have said it but your positive attitude is amazing and I wanted to thank you for making me realize that I had meant to register with Bumrungrad as we leave for Thailand in 12 days and one never does know what's in store - anywhere in the world for that matter, even at home! Wishing you a full recovery and many many more anniversaries together.

Thyra...now that everything turned out well, your sigh of relief can be heard in my L.A. neighborhood!

Cedars is #1....all my friends here in L.A. swear by it..."always tell the ambulance driver, if your conscious, Cedars, please!"

Best wishes for a continuing recovery, and a happy 2007 full of travel fun!

Looking way ahead for you young folks, just think of the stories you'll tell your grandchildren. Embellish, my dear, embeliish!

Thyra, WOW! I just returned from Thailand and felt sorry for myself because I came down with a pretty yucky case of the flu. Your story is truely amazing. How is your leg today? Has it gotten back to full use or will there be any permanent problems?

Thanks for all of the well wishes again.. Well leg has been hurting a bit lately.. I have to rush to the infections disease man if anything weird happens, but as my plastic surgeon told me when he sewed it back up.. as the dead nerves come back to life, the first sensation is always ... PAIN! Love that! As for India.. I am guessing October.. since I am grounded for 12 months due to my leg (have to be near a western hospital at all times) About the Tong thing.. I don't recall that we paid extra for the Fishing Village.. she asked if we wanted to do it and we said yes as part of the daily cost for using her services.. plus I think she charges mileage?? One of the downsides to having such a traumatic thing happen is that even pleasant details of the trip itself are a little bit blurry.. I can't remember much about anything except how great the pain medication was at Cedars!LOL.. But yea India.. I am obsessed now.. OH for the Fishing village, we paid the family for the lunch (money well spent!)

You can only register at Bumrumgrad in Bangkok at the hospital. We travel to Bangkok regularly and get dental care there, so are registered. If you are a one-time visitor, there is no reason to register - just know that it is by far the best hospital in the area.
