Seven times to Thailand ... but never been to Myanmar (Burma). Scandalous! I would put this wonderful country on your list right away.
You can visit year round. August is low season but the rain turns the countryside green and beautiful. You'll also have the views to yourself. November is perfect.

Guess which two people on this thread are having dinner together tonight??? For a couple of people who don't agree on anything, they sure as heck spend a lot of time together! (OMG! I just realized they're my parents!)

Dinner with Bob is part of my court-ordered community service. We do not accept the accusation of being BC's parents. She's just trying to collect some past allowance money.
Rizzuto-don't the east and west flights to Asia from the US go very far north? It's the whole Great Circle fallacy.

Gpanda--I mean, "Mom", what have you done to warrant court-ordered community service??? Please send my back allowance check (with interest, of course) to my address in Plymouth, Michigan, as I am now jobless. I'd prefer a certified check, so I'll know funds will clear.
Thanks a heap.
Your loving daughter,
BC

"Vietnam," she murmured softly. "Vietnam, with its soft winds and leisurely boat roofs to travel down the Mekong and being lulled to sleep on HaLong Bay and wonderful food which almost excuses French colonialism and a religion in which both Winston Churchill and Charlie Chaplin are in the pantheon and lovely people showing you how to float your little candle boat down the Perfume River...Oh, yes, Vietnam."

When I flew to HK two years ago from Chicago, we went over the pole --- "Ulan Bator" came up on the litttle tv screen. When we flew back we went much farther south. I guess it has to do with the prevailing winds at the time.

"the middle east" is not a continent. I believe israel is on the continent of asia, just as egypt is on the continent of africa, while both are in the "middle east"
as for turkey, the miracle of istanbul is that the bosphorus divides the 2 sides- one is asia, the other is europe. the claim to fame of istanbul is that is in both continents and is one of the only (if not the only) city with that distinction. I think my suggestions both qualify as "asia"

rizzuto,
Language is really about linguistics, not politics and history. Technically, you're correct, but usage is all that really matters. Middle East, or Mideast, is common usage for the rough geographical boundaries most people understand. Even Middle Easterners use it.
What always puzzles me, as a third generation Californian (no jokes people!), is the term Midwest to describe, say the area of Chicago. From my POV, that's east, not west.

Amy-Vietnam is definitely on our list, but I don't think the weather in November is all that good.
LAL-trust me, Chicago is definitely in the MisWest. The flat "A's" of the inhabitants clearly establish that as an accurate statement. Corn. Any state with that much corn, i.e., Illinois, is in the Midwest. In the east, we grow the sweet corn. In the Midwest, they grow the corn for cows about which Micahel Poulian wrote so brilliantly in "An Omnivore's Dilemma".

JUst like Bob. He bitches about the water and does not mention that the food was very good. It's called s&I Togo on Brighton St. just west of the Harvard St. intersection. WE had Laab, grilled pork with eggplant, pad Kee Meow and crispy pad thai. All were wonderful.
Not to mention that Cambridge has its own water supply and was not affected by the water main break.

Andy - go to Japan. You will be AMAZED. I cannot believe you haven't been there.
Bob suggested we meet up at the Similans before we go to Thailand - the travel schedules prevented this - but I live 15 minutes' walk from the Similans. We should meet up (I am a Boston lawyer too, by the way, and am working on a brief right now! Unfortunately, I am responsible for my own polishing!).

My vote would be either Vietnam or Japan.
David and I loved Vietnam so much more than either of us anticipated and the food is incredible. Travel there is inexpensive too if that's any consideration.
As for Japan, I haven't been yet but it's currently top on my list for where I want to go in Asia next.

Usernameistaken, if it's possible for you, please come to the Boston Fodors GTG this October. There have been and will be threads on this. You will get to meet the real Rizzuto. You will get to meet the real Andy and the real Bob. And if necessary, you will get to drink heavily to cope with all of it.

Username-Bob and Karen are off to Bali et al. in a week or so, but Beth and I would enjoy meeting you at Similans for dinner. Drop me a note at [email protected]
BC and Don-we never argue over the bill because I take it, do the math and tell everyone how much they owe. Nothing good can come of Bob being involved in any financila transaction.
Kristine-Japan is high on our list.
18 days of treatment down and no side effects whatsoever. I am prepared whatever comes from the cumulative effects.
U-I have co-counsel on this case. We both have to get our billing in and doing the first rough draft lets me create the framework of the brief.
