Excelsior Tailors in Bangkok-anyone use them

This tailor is close to Savile Row FAshion on Suriwongse near our hotel in Silom. I've been emailing getting price information from both. Having trouble deciding which one to use. Did you like the fabrics at Savile for men's dress shirts, pants, and suit. Has anyone used Narry near the River, that was also recommended to me. Thanks. Alana

Still looking for comments on these 2 tailors. Also, Narry near the river was also recommended. I don't want to spend a lot of time looking, please help. Thanks. Alana

There are about 11,000 posts on this subject, many of which you'll find by typing "Bangkok tailor" in the search box.

Or did you want those of us who have responded before to retype everything we've said?

Can't help re your two but for what it is worth we used Rajawongse in Sukhumvit last year . They are regarded highly by many on this site from which I got their name .

They have a big US clientele especially amongst the military and diplomatic corp. They have made for both Presidents Bush who are photographed with them .

In the end were disappointed with their approach and in some instances the quality of the finished product . I had 3 suits made from my own fabric plus about 6 shirts and my two friends had 1 suit ( his own fabric )and 6 or more shirts and 2 suits ( Raj fabric )each made.

I expected that if a time was set to see them for fittings that their attention would be on me at the designated time but instead we were constantly kept waiting over about 5 appointments which were necessary because of errors in measurements( neck size wildly out ) requiring major adjustments .

Fittings were always their attendance on multiple clients . interrupted by other clients .Trying to have their standard cuts varied was resisted eg a double breasted waistcoat took real perseverance and then it is still not quite right .

My friend who had 2 made is delighted with his and the former not happy at all and gave away the suit .I am moderately happy but they are not true bespoke tailors .So for what it is worth I would go with rhkmk's recommendation , who I know from this site he has used many times .

i like my tailor....but i also have heard many good things about the tailor mentioned above...craig swears by him....

i like to have fittings at odd hours...that way you are usually not interrupted....jack at monet is very good with only serving one person at a time...

Bob has had multiple good experiences w/Monet Il Sarto; I have had him make clothes for me once, and I won't be back.

Not that the clothes were horrible or ill-fitting, but I found the quality and selection of materials to be mediocre and not worth a trip.

I found a guy on the top floor of Oriental Place, Maxcoco, whose goods seem to me to be a step or two about MIS. Then again, his prices are higher, too. And I have seen nothing in Bangkok (Monet, Maxcoco, Raja, or Rajongwese) that comes even vaguely close to the high-end tailors in Hong Kong (WW Chan, Ascot Chang, David's Shirts).

I think Rajawongse needs to move into a bigger space. Their business is doing well and if nothing else they could use another changing room. I always go in when they open in the morning - it is somewhat busy even then - but they already have my measurements so there are not big problems.

The shirts I had made have been very good .It is their attention to detail or ability to alter their standard designs that concerned me . They are too busy and I absolutely agree that the premises are too small eg not enough seats for clients whilst waiting etc .

But if all you want is a standard design suit then they are fine .

I guess that I am used to Hong Kong where excellent true bespoke tailors abound , or at least used to do so and at fair prices for their work .

Always happy to hear of another name in BK that has proved good .

I have just returned from Bangkok and have been to Excelsior tailor.i am a frequent visitor there and have always been happy with the quality. The shop is small compared to other shops in Bangkok but the collection is large. They have large sample collection hidden in the cupboards that they show recommended customers or old customers. I would surely recommend them.
Apart from that however, I did have a great, entertaining and very pleasant atmosphere getting my suits and shirts done up, and because I enjoyed this process quite alot (along with the (VERY) cheap massages), it is worth taking the time to write about it.
I have tried tailors in Hongkong. The price are really high in Hongkong and the quality aint that good too.
Rajawongse in Sukhumvit is famous amongst American so he welcome Americans well . I was not nicely welcomed there and not attended well during fitting due to large customers in the shop. The quality has degraded from time to time.

Hi Adam: Would you please explain "they have a sample collection hidden in the cupboards that they show recommended customers". Is the fabric of better quality -more expensive-or the designs are different. And how do I ask to see them. thanks. alana

Alana, If you do your research you will see that men suits the trend is low. IT would either be single breasted 2 or 3 or double breasted. While for ladies the variety is more towards style. They got catalogues to chose from for both men and ladies.
The Swatch fabrics make a suit look elegant.
What i mean is that they have some good collection swatches that they show few high quality customers.
It is much finer wool and cashmere.NOrmal shops dont stock it since its expensive. Just like jewellery items.
You can ask them to show you good quality and they will willingly show you the difference in price etc.
They are straight and easy people.
I paid 900 dollars for 3 suits from them and i love them. The quality i had back home would cost me 900+ for 1 suit and that too off the rack.
Cheers,
Adam.

In my experience over 20 plus years the test is in the fitting/s .True bespoke tailoring is a joy . A good tailor knows what you need in terms of cut to make you look good and hide the lumps and bumps . They go about methodically creating the first drapes from calico and a few strips of fabric pinned after the first selection measurement process and then adjusted .The second fitting is the garment , not complete and tacked and pinned and and chalked .It is where the choice of how high cut the jacket is to be , selections of where the buttons go and at what height is done , more pins. The the third is a largely finished garment that has final adjustments made , hems settled etc .

Hong Kong had it as has Melbourne but I am yet to find it in Bangkok

I have to agree with JohnFitz.

Also, I can't imagine going to get a made-to-measure suit and choosing the fabric based on a swatch. I'd need to see and feel it draped on me.

I have been staying at Siamheritage for long time and never believed in custom clothing until one find day i went across for a closer look at the clothier and soon found myself in conversation with Sonny of Excelsior. I was captivated by the patterned silk materials and had no hesitation in ordering some shirts. They were ready next day and beautifully finished. This wonderful material has proved perfect for the traveller. The shirts were casual but smart. They wash easily and dry quickly and no ironing is required.

On my return to the UK I contacted Tailor Sonny again and a further order was quickly dispatched.

Finding Tailor Sonny has proved to be the best shopping discovery in all my travels. Since 2002 my wife and I have passed through bangkok many times. In fact, our travel arrangements are often organised in such a way to include a visit to our Excelsior tailor at the Siam Heritage. I have had over 8 suits,20 shirts, both casual and formal, trousers, shorts and a whole range of clothing tailored.
One favourite are the Vito Cesare Wool. My wife has also had blouses, dresses, again casual and formal. Every garment has been tailored to perfection.
My Son has also visited them on a transit to Australia and they posted the suit back to UK. It was his first suit and a perfect fit one.
From home I can telephone, fax or e-mail and the response is immediate. Excelsior has proved to be a treasure. Nothing is a problem for them. Technology (PayPal) enables easy worldwide payment.

I am a regular visitor to Bangkok and for a number of trips had little success in finding a reasonable tailor. Early attempts at getting something worthwhile to wear to work and for formal wear mostly ended up in the rubbish bins or
re cycling bins. It was all a bit frustrating after we had used tailors in Hong Kong in earlier trips and were delighted with the high quality work albeit top prices as well. About 5 years ago I used Raja's on Soi 4 Sukhumvit Road and was very happy with the workmanship and fair prices based on what I would pay in Australia. I have purchased a number of suits over the last five years and while the workmanship has varied, I have been happy with the results. The suits wear well and don't lose their shape after a number of years wear. The Egyptian cotton shirts are also well made and fit well. They are real cotton not the polyester/cotton mix that many Bangkok tailors pass off as Egyptian cotton I have also tried Rajawongse near the Landmark hotel. The suits have been good although I was disappointed with the shirts which did not fit well especially around the neck. At the fitting I was informed that some shrinkage would occur and the collar would fit better- it didn't even after a number of washes. So I don't use this place for shirts anymore. I think the best time to get a suit made is in the off European tourist season. The tailors are less rushed and you have a couple of fittings which is essential for a good job. There are obviously a lot of reasonable places in Bangkok however, there are many more bad places that really cannot be classed as tailors and their work is just rubbish- you need to do your research before getting anything made so you won't feel you have been robbed. Its so frustrating when you spend time on fittings etc to find you have been delived something that is hopeless and you can't wear it.
