Elephants in Bangkok?

This may be politically incorrect, but I have always wanted to ride an elephant.

We will be in Bangkok for only 3 days --Hubby has a meeting -- so not enough time to go to the country. Is there any place to get close to elephants inside the city?

Thank you kindly.

I don't know, but they are around somewhere because I remember clearly that there was a live elephant parked outside of the entrance to the Four Seasons Hotel when the Hotel car pulled into the driveway to drop me off...back on the Dec 2002 trip. I thought I was just jetlagged and imagining things, but the driver confirmed it. The elephants owner was standing right beside it and this was well after midnight! Happy Travels!

You're right, it is 'incorrect' in many ways. Thailand has one of the worlds most horrific animal rights records. Don't feed into the demand for this inhumane use of this majestic animal.

There has just been a major effort to get elephants out of Bangkok, so it is unlikely that you would find any in the city. Even if you did, it is unlikely that they would be set up for giving rides.

I?m afraid that if you want to ride an elephant you will have to get out of Bangkok, preferably to the north.

the elephants are still aournd darn thing sure do make enough noice I can hear them from my apartment from a about 3 blocks away at victory monument... they are in town durring rainy season since the cant do much with the crops or logging at the time. I don'r remember anyone riding the animals but the handalers ask you too buy some food which you hand feed them. I always wonder where they sleep. I just pictue the elephent and owner huddled underneeth a highway bridge.

There was an elephant and handler in BKK, right in front of the entrance to Gaysorn Plaza! I think it was my summer of '03 visit to Thailand. The handler was not offering rides. Yes, you could feed it, and you could take photos.

There are usually some short Elephant rides available at The Rose Garden. Very touristy though - i.e. a 5 minute walk up the path and back.

Rose Garden is a cultural centre and resort about an hour outside bangkok. They put on cultural shows for tourists (Thai dancing and boxing). It is usually included as part of a day trip to the floating market

The Rose Garden is somewhat touristy, but if you can arrange to stay in one of the traditional teak houses around the lake, it is very pleasant and peaceful.

Years ago, we held our wedding reception on the lawn beside the lake; long after the tourists and day-trippers had departed.
