Designer knockoffs in Hong Kong

Hi there,
I've been reading the threads on shopping in HK and didnt' find any references to shopping for designer knock offs. I have an 8 hour layover in HK and would love to spend the time shopping. Any suggestions on whether I should go to Conrad or the Causeway or someplace else? Many thanks! Sarah

How much should one pay for the best quality knock offs such as TAG watches and Vuitton bags? Are there Lacoste shirts at the markets? If so how much are they and are the real?
Thanks

No idea on prices - it's up to you to decide whether the price is worth it.

I would assume that any name branded goods in Ladies Market are not genuine - I'm not aware that Lacoste has any offical stockists on market stalls yet

I really haven't seen much counterfeit goods in Hong Kong in recent years. People looking for that stuff have all gone to Shenzhen to get them.

Meanwhile, if there's knockoffs to be found, the high-quality ones will not be displayed on the street. Instead, you may find people holding a portfolio of pictures of the goods. After you negotiate the price, and the seller believe you're not Customs or Interpol, then they'll direct you to an address up some building to claim your goods.

At least that's how it was done a few years ago.

Thanks everyone! I went to the Li Yuen streets (east and west) and the only knockoffs I found were for wrist watches (cK, gucci) and the quality was so-so. I've got another 8 hrs layover on my way back home and will check out the ladies bazaar. I met up with some locals during my previous layover and they mentioned that Temple street (off the Jordon stop on the MTR) has some good shopping. I'll check it out and write back on whether its worth it.

Rkkwan is right. When we were there earlier this year, the few vendors that did have knock-off purses and watches, did not have them displayed out in the open. They had brochures or portfolios with pictures of them.

Thanks Mr Traveller and Rkkwan- are there any specific areas that you visited where the vendors had brochures with samples of the knockoffs? I have an 8 hour layover on my way back home and would love to spend the time digging for some knock offs.
Thanks,
Sarah

sarah - I really don't have specific, recent, info. Depending on the time of day, you may try the Ladies' Market in Mongkok. It opens at around noon time. The Temple Street market is more likely to have it, but it only opens in the evening.

I have to LOL at why anyone would want to spend time in a great city like Hong Kong shopping for fake designer watches and handbags!! First of all there is so much else to see and do here, especially in the great winter weather. Secondly, this is no longer the place to find fake goods. I live here, and was just in NYC for Christmas and saw more fake stuff on Canal Street than I ever see here, and this was true of Paris, and I am sure that the same is true for any US city. . . . Finally, Hong Kong is now so full of new, young, hip designers that you are wasting your time on the fake stuff. IMO you are better off buying a real item from an actual – if unknown- designer than buying a fake, it may be worth more in time and you will have a unique piece now! Spend your time wandering the little boutiques, you will be amazed at the quality and innovative designs. Take a walk along Peel Street or Stanton Street in Soho or the newly trendy Star Street area off of Queen's Road East. Lots of good restaurants here as well.

Also, you can find discounts on well known and real brand-name designer goods like Prada as well, try the following two outlets on Hong Kong island:

Lane Crawford Warehouse
Horizon Plaza
2 Li Wing Street
Ap Lei Chau, Hong Kong Island
(near Aberdeen)

This is in a huge warehouse of mostly furniture/antique stores (expensive to ship but they have some really wonderful shops and very good prices). Lane Crawford is an upscale Hong Kong department store and has a good size discount outlet here. It can be very hit or miss, but bargains are there are designer goods. You need to take a taxi, will take about 20 minutes from Central and cost about US$20. You could combine this with a trip to Aberdeen as it is not too far; could also be combined with a trip to the Prada designer outlet at Space (see below).

Space
Marina Square East
2nd Floor Commercial Block
South Horizons
Ap Lei Chau, Hong Kong Island

This is the Prada designer outlet for all its lines. You also need to take a taxi, would be about 20 minutes from Central and cost about US$20. You have to be a bit patient and look.

But some who would never buy a street copy (simply because that type of copy does not appeal to them.. bad quality) are tempted to purchase the so called AAA quality fakes..decent quality does appeal to them...beacause they really cannot afford the real thing and they think that the real bags are a ripoff also....many have said you can get these in Shenzhen if you ask around. Now I have been reading posts that you can get these in other cities..Beijing for one ...so now I too am wondering ..if you can get AAA in say Guilin too???
