Day trips from Bangkok

I was just in Bangkok 10 days ago and took the Pearl of Siam trip to the ancient capital of Ayuthaya. It cost $40 US. Your hotel should be able to book you and they pick you and and deliver you back to your hotel. I remember leaving very early and getting back to my hotel around 5pm. Best $40 I've spent in a long time.
It's 1 1/2 hr drive by bus. You see the Bang Pa In as well as 2 sites in Authaya itself. Then a 4 hour boatride with a surprisingly good buffet lunch and a chance to watch the river life slowly pass. It's a great trip for a very hot day -- worth it to escape the traffic and heat in BKK. And the sites are wonderful. It would be my "don't miss"

We're in the middle of SEA Game madness here. The Vietnamese women's football team won the gold last night and tonight is the big night for the men. The Vietnamese poured into the center of the city on their motorbikes waving flags and banners. Tonight they are showing the game on screens all over the city.

In April I booked a full day trip at the Shangri-La Hotel to Ayuthaya...a fabulous day. We stopped at ancient ruins and at the Thai 'Summer Palace' (the grounds are immense but you can rent an electric golf cart to move through the beautiful gardens). Ayuthaya was spectacular; it surpassed my expectations because it was largely unimproved and because there were only a dozen visitors there at the time. Afterwards, we boarded the Shangri-La Hotel's private motor yacht for a wonderful buffet lunch as we cruised back to Bangkok (the boat trip took about 2 to 3 hours and was very interesting). We made reservations for the Ayuthaya trip directly with the Shangri-La Hotel concierge via the internet. Bon Voyage.

I would include the flea market, Chatujak, Asia's largest in not to be missed day excursions. Peaks on Sun but can also be enjoyed on Sat or Fri afternoon. I am going cycling this Sat so can tell you after how the cycling day tour is - is offered daily. www.realasia.net
