I finally finished our photos. There are very few from Tokyo because of the rain but plenty from the remainder of our trip. They can be found here:

"If the substance you mentioned is in fact green for you, I'd wonder if you'll be in sufficient health to undertake a trip to Japan."

Don Topaz, my spelling is what is in bad health. The phrase I was thinking of was 'pea green' and not 'pee green' - oi, oi. What a slip.

Great photos, Craig.

The geisha GTG in Kanazawa looks like it was a lot of fun. Nice to see Peter and Linda in the group photo, having not seen them for 2 years.

#58, at Kaikuro, looks like there is an irori (i think that is the right word) in the lower left of the photo. I wonder how and why it is used. For boiling water, I suppose. Is that an exhibit or does it look like it is put to use?

The Kanazawa geisha didn't smile because of the differences in the white of teeth and makeup. The Kyoto geisha are maiko - the hair decorations. The shot of the pair from behind shows their colorful darai obi, the very low collars have red trim, the high geta. The unpainted area of the nape of the neck is supposed to be sexy. Love the photo of the rabu hoteru with the rates posted outside. Those children at Kasuga are adorable, esp #133 the terrific close-up shot. The Sagano train is now on my Japan bucket-list.

Your "Western" room at Mukayu absolutely is the same as the one on their website, even the trees outside are the same.

Whether you were informed or guessing I think that you are correct that the pair are "tourist" maiko. The way the red hair ribbons are worn say they would be 1st-year maiko, but neither has the strings of flowers hanging down from the front of their hair. Should be visible over their left shoulder even from behind.

The one on the left, the pattern on her obi goes all the way to the end. That is not right. The tail of the one on the right has a "flag" at the end, below the pattern, with a symbol that would represent her okiya.

These three look more authentic:

The beauty under the umbrella has the look of a senior maiko with full lipstick top and bottom and no strings of flowers in the front. Her right eye is looking to her left but left eye is looking forward. I can do that.

Another remarkable trip report, Craig. I thank you and everyone on this forum who took the time to share their experiences. It is adding so much to my planning for a solo trip in May. Now if I could only find some wonderful friends like you have to connect with while there
