copthorne orchid resort penang

My husband and I are planning our first trip to malaysia for next march and I wondered if any Fodorites had stayed in this hotel at this time of the year.
Also need advice on weather then and places to go.
Eating out recommendations would also be greatly appreciated.
regards
CM

Like fine wine you must let this post age a bit before you sample it!

Its a little bit on the outskirts of Batu Ferringhi - the main beach resort.

If you're after a good 3* hotel a little bit better located - unpretentious, good value with virtually all rooms overlooking the sea and a 5 mins walk to the main hub of batu ferringhi I would recommend The Casuarina.

Accomodation is very cheap in Malaysia so unless you are on a very very tight budget the difference in costs will be minimal.

About 20 minutes away. Taxis will be v v v cheap, public transport even less.

Dear Bill as time was of the essence 4 days was not being impatient I think!Dear Walter
Thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately cost is an issue on this occasion as we have to change our booking within the same company (Virgin holidays) the Casuararina would cost an extra $300. Since my post was first put on the site we have had to make a decision or lose our deposit so we went for the copthorne. Would still be interested in any other info you could give me.
Many thanks
CM

Copthorne is at Tanjung Bungah which is between Georgetwon and Batu Ferringhi ( where the Casuarina is ), Tanjang Bungah is much quieter than Bat Ferringi but is closer to Georgetown. The local bus runs all along that coast and is perfectly 'fine' and very very cheap.
I haven't stayed there but have stayed at Tanjung Bungah area.

is a slow site ( too many moving graphics ) but is quite good once you get into it.

Since the tsunami we were very apprehensive about our trip but following information given by other fodorites weve decidied to go ahead as from what we are told it is more important than ever to support the local economy.
We would appreciate some help as to which rooms to choose and which to avoid (if any), and any eating places nearby.
thanks in anticipation.

Countrymouse,

Thankfully Penang was not as badly affected by the tsunami as Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, etc. So the damage was light (by comparison) and recovery was much faster. Things are as normal and I hope you'll enjoy your trip.

What sort of food are you after? Local fare? Take a look at these reviews:

Countrymouse : Here is a site with hundreds of recent photos of Penang. The fellow who runs the site posts new ones regularly. If you can't find photos of your hotel on the first page there are numerous other pages you can scroll through and there probably are photos of your hotel. If not, you could ask for some to be taken and posted and the moderator ( Kayes ) will likely do it.

The Copthorne faces the sea so my only suggestion would be to find out if they have the option for a 'Sea View' room.

According to the 'blurb' they all seem to have sea views, but there are different types of room available and I was wondering which would be best.
On previous bad experiences we know that some hotel rooms are to be avoided at all cost (over noisy bars etc)and some have a better layout than others so thats what we are interested in.
Thanks anyway for taking the trouble to reply

anyone stayed in the 'tower' rooms?
Are they any better?
