I am a great fan of Club Med's but it is expensive and with a 2 yr old you might not actaully get to experience 'those things you are paying for' if you get what I mean. Location at Kata beach is nice, some rooms are a long walk. I think you want your child to enjoy but also 'you' want to enjoy.
I would swop the panache and style and quiet of the Club Med and go for the Holiday Inn at Patong. Totally different. But they have a great kids club, have trained staff as babysitters, and the pool and beach are just moments from the rooms. It is in a busy part of Patong but you might find that if you want to leave your child with a hotel sitter you may want to be relatively nearby. Going out from the Club Med means going quite a way from the hotel.
I think the H/Inn is more geared towards those with young kids. Having said that, the Club Med IS very nice indeed, you know your own child and whether he/she is easily occupied or not, hope this helps.
The Holiday Inn also has some new Pool Villas which ar said to be very nice indeed.
Try this link: It is rather long so you need to cut and paste, but they base rates on Thai Baht and I find them very good and cheap

http://www.r24.org/huahin.20m.com/phuket/holidayinn/

Look at Le Meridien in Phuket. Since it is part of chain it often has special prices. Check the website. Good kidde pool and children's facilities. It also has baby elephant.
I think you could get a good deal at better hotels in Phuket at this time. The JW Marriott in Phuket is apparently offering great prices, and people on this site have also mentioned seeing really low prices on Priceline (like under $100 per night), run a search. This is a very kid-friendly hotel, with a large pool with a kids area and a kids camp. They have time share villas with kitchens which might be better for a family. (The surf here is rough, so I would stick to the pool.) The Sheraton is also another large kid-friendly hotel, the surf here is gentler. I would suggest you check these out.

Finally, if you do choose Club Med, check to make sure they have cribs. I have friends who went to Club Med Bali several years ago with a child, and the hotel did not have any cribs. Gives you an idea of how unprepared they may be for kids….
JW Marriott way away from 'anything'. Yes Elaine, I should have mentioned Le Meridien, again they have an excellent kids club which has all day activities.
I would say Le Meridien which has it's own beach ( in a bay, no other hotels ), 5 minutes from Patong, or the Holiday Inn, another worth mentioning that although not having a kids club that I know of does have some simply goereous bungalows cottages in the gardens which are great fun is the Club Andaman Resort in Phuket.
Opposite the beach at Patong huge gardens and pools, probably 60% cheaper than Club Med!

http://www.freewebs.com/club_andaman_phuket_resort_hotel/

Take a look at the Garden Cottages, very much what people are looking for. You stay in a tropical style but there is air-con, 24 hr room service etc.
