Choosing hotels - Bangkok
Is it wise to book in the Emporium Suites if you want to do the Historic district? Or should we book some where near the river? How long will it take on the train from the Emporium to this area?

You can get to the historic district (the Major wats and Grand palace area) from anywhere in the city. I prefer to stay by the river as I find it more pleasant (less noisy, air a bit better and a bit cooler). It's also convenient to take the water taxis right to the wats. And no matter where you stay, you should get that experience. If you stay away from the river, take the skytrain to Taksin, walk down the stairs to the dock and take one of the water taxis (more like a bus - large boat that holds many people and you play a small fare, maybe 24 baht) to the Grand Palace.

There is no "central" location in Bangkok. The sights and sites are spread out. No matter where you stay, you will be travelling to see many of the tourist "must sees". Many of us on this forum elect to stay on the river because it is a pleasant respite from the frenzy that is Bangkok. You can read countless threads on which hotel is best, but any of the five usual suspects will be great.
