I've not done it, but it should be possible. I think it's about 150 miles each way, with most of it on the Chengdu-Chongqing expressway. Just start early.

We did a day trip - Chengdu/Dazu return - for a couple of Italian girls working for the Olympic's commitee - last January. It's a good day out - but there's a lot of traveling

Give us a shout on our Email for more info and pics of Dazu and our trip.

It takes about 5.5 hours from Chengdu to Dazu. The tour of Dazu takes about 1.5 hours. Please that you will take about 11 hours travelling a a bus. A better choice is to stay a night there and get back to Chengdu next day.

If you hire transport it takes no longer than 3 hours (a traffic-easy departure from Chengdu will even cut this time down - the majority of the driving can be made on the Chengdu-Chongqing motorway) - since there are so many sites (Baoding and Beishan are just two of them - Dazu is just the name of the major town in the area) you will either be missing an awful lot, or going awful quickly, by just spending 1 and half hours observing the carvings. To really enjoy and appreciate sites like this it often pays to take your time!!!!!
