Carol is Blogging from Bangkok!

I guess if Degas can be blogging from Bali, then I can just as well be blogging from Bangkok...

Arrived here at 11pm Wednesday night, slightly early, on UA from Tokyo/Chicago. 400 baht (that included a very good tip) taxi into the city, to my home away from home for the next two weeks. Adelphi Suites on soi 8. The staff remembers me! I've been here twice already this year (and will return in Dec/Jan).

I managed to get my second wind after landing, so I was able to do a couple of things after checking in. First I went to the Pickled Liver (Sukhumvit soi 11) to catch up with Maeng and her crew. She fixed me a snack of some sort of Thai pork strips with dipping sauce. Just what I needed! We chatted for quite a while, and then I hit 7-11 for water, yogurt, laundry powder, and rice cups.

Right now I need sleep.

I'll be checking in pretty much everyday. If there are things you want me to try to check out, you can ask. I have NO SCHEDULE whatsoever. Maeng and I will fly to CM for a day of shopping, but even that isn't decided yet. This is vacation! Plans are made on the fly.

Time for some sleep. It's a 12 hour time difference from the midwest, so my body isn't sure what time it is!!

Carol

Ok, I'll admit to being jetlagged today, but gpanda, what's an "e"?? My brain is trying to shut down. I need rest!!!

Exchange rate today is somewhere around 33.75 baht to the dollar. I did not need to exchange yet, but I'll try to keep watching the rates.

Maeng and I wandered around the Siam area today. We had lunch at the Greyhound Cafe at Siam Center. If you want a good lunch menu and you haven't tried a Greyhound Cafe, you should give it a try. They are located in a lot of places. It's a chain. I like their "Sandwich in a bowl" which is like a salad, with lettuce, tuna, croutons, mushrooms, and a nice Caesar style dressing. Nice light lunch.

There is some sort of Thai Craft display going on for the next four days. It is located on the skywalkway underneath the sky train, between Paragon and Central World. Lots of stuff to look at! Interesting place to set up a craft fair! Thousands of people walk by everyday, I'm sure!

Adelphi is still a great place to stay, but the apartments are beginning to lose some of their newness after 9 months of use. I will continue to stay here at least for a while.

Maeng was explaining to me today about the little alley that is right in front of her place along soi 11. It seems that there is talk about "renting" the open sidewalk space out in front to street vendors. Maeng says she will try to rent the space herself rather than having some competition setting up right outside the door, selling food and beverages out of a cart or a little vehicle. Can't say as I blame her. They will just need to open up verandah style dining outside. Should not be too complicated to do.

There is a new Burger King by Nana Plaza, which is near the Nana skytrain station. I thought it was interesting that there was a little van parked outside of BK, with chairs set around tiny tables and a "bar"... they were selling snacks and drinks out of the van. This is an example of someone setting up a business right outside BK's front door! There must be more of these new little vehicle stands. Drive up, park, and open a business!! Only in Bangkok... Every bit of space seems to get used for selling something!

We are maybe going to get a rain shower this evening. I won't be venturing out in it. Too tired right now. Just trying to stay awake!

Yes, Lauie, I'll be in BOS for the GTG. Already got my ticket and my reservations! Looking forward to another fodorite gathering.

Hanuman, I'm here through Sept 2. I leave very early on the 3rd. If we can't meet up this time, we can try for December/January.

Bob... so now I'm Mrs Fodors!!! I'm not sure I deserve that title nearly as much as AO does. lol

Not intending to make anyone jealous that I'm back in BKK and you are back in the USA (or where ever you call home). You would all be bored to death with my routine here. Shopping, eating, sleeping, shopping, eating, sleeping, you get the idea!!

Oh, the old NariPhand building is in the process of being demolished. This is the one located across the street from World Trade Center. I don't know what is going on that space. Maybe Hanuman or MichaelBKK would know. Maeng did not have any idea.

Catch you all later!

Carol

Rahulm:
It's raining up there in San Francisco? Yikes! I'm flying up there tomorrow for nearly a week of rest. What's the temperature? I might need to pack a coat. I haven't finished packing.
It's over 90 degrees with very bright sunshine down here in L.A. I'll have to adjust FAST! I'd better pack an umbrella. Happy Travels!

Sawasdee kah, fodorites!

Thanks, Craig, ... Carol"e"... duh, I should've thought of that one!!! LOL After a relatively good nights sleep, I am feeling a bit more chipper this morning. Up early, doing a quick load of wash in the machine in my kitchen(ette). The machine is a bit noisy this morning. Hope I don't wake the neighbors... haha It is only 6am here.

There is nothing set in stone on the agenda for today, but I'll bet it involves some shopping (smile). I also need to connect with a few more friends who live here in BKK.

Maeng pointed out the building that holds Brad's current favorite BKK restaurant... The Long Table. I think I should really try to make it there for a meal. Perhaps a girls night out with a few Thai friends of mine. The view from the Long Table would appear to be the Queen's Park (???).. Brad can verify that information.

Enjoy your day!
Carol

@guenmai:

Rains = a bit more than a drizzle ( irritating enough).
However, depends on what part of SF you'll stay in. Usually, if you live around the Financial district/Union Square area you should be fine. Its not as foggy out there. Next week is supposed to be better. The temperature this morning was in the fifties but it gets better as the day progresses.

@bob: I do have a 4 burner stove. I use it to make Indian-style-tea and delicious pad-thai!

guenmai: If you're at the 4S on market street, you really do not have to worry over the weather.
